Force Transcoding?

I have an issue with streaming remotely. On certain devices (I've so far had it on my Galaxy S7 and Amazon Fire Stick), certain media attempts to play directly because there is sufficient bandwidth to handle it. However, there are often issues with this where playback is verrrrry slow and on the Fire Stick will crash Emby completely. However, when the video is being transcoded, regardless of bandwidth, the video plays no problem.

Here is an example, this video file works no problem (direct streaming):

This one will crash the Fire Stick when attempting to direct stream but does work when it's being transcoded:

The main difference I can see between these files is that one's audio configuration is 5.1 and the other is stereo 2.0. I have had issues with sound when I used to run Plex, I'm presuming that as the file is being transcoded it is being converted to 2.0 to suit the Fire Stick and then plays no problem, however if it's direct streaming the Fire Stick is attempting to handle 5.1 and not doing a very good job? It's not my stick, I hate them personally, this being one reason.

Does Emby not figure out a compatible format that the Fire Stick will play before attempting to direct stream? Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can force a downmix to stereo in the app on the firestick, assuming thats what you want to do.  You can also lower the bitrate in the app to force a transcode.  There is also a playback correction button on the OSD which will force a transcode. You can also set a global external bitrate limit on the server as well as a bitrate limit per external connection.  The limits on the server side may not force a transcode, but is generally a good idea to set anyway to match your upload speed limit.

Thanks for this, I'll have a look at this next time I'm on it. It's not my stick, personally I hate them but that's another matter!

How do I set limits per connection? Is this set on Emby Server? I couldn't find this anywhere  . At the moment I have the global limit set under Playback > Streaming to 1Mbps, though my upload limit is actually around 8Mbps.

also, if you've set the global limit to 1Mbps then both of those files should be transcoding since their bitrates are both 1.6Mbps so I dunno what's up w/ that.  @@Luke?

Yes they are transcoding, that's my current workaround to force them to transcode. Apologies for the confusion.

Edit: got the user-specific limit set now, thanks for you help. Will have a look at the Fire Stick.

Yes, it does and it also takes into account several settings like mentioned above.

For the crash situation, can you please open a new topic in the Android TV/Fire TV forum with specific information?  Thanks.
