bflagg 2 Posted February 16, 2018 Posted February 16, 2018 If I have a folder called star trek, and with in it contains sub folders with each of the differnet series, the metadata doesn't show up for each... Star trek ....Star Trek The Next Generation .......Season 1 .......Season 2 ......etc.. ....Star Trek .......Season 1 .......Season 2 ......etc.. ....Star Trek Deep Space 9 .......Season 1 .......Season 2 ......etc.. Can this done or must I separate them out of the main directory?
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted February 16, 2018 Posted February 16, 2018 (edited) I do not know for sure as I have come to Emby from Plex and Emby may be a bit more forgiving than Plex but my experience is that what you are trying will not work. That is a TV show library must point to the a folder that has the Shows in it. A subfolder that then contains the shows may well not work. TV shows seem to need to be like this: TV Shows <--- The library points here ---------TV Show Name (Year first aired if needed) <--- This folder holds the season folders ------------------Season 01 <--- This folder holds all the episodes for season 01 -------------------------ShowName - s01e01 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------ShowName - s01e02 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------And so on for the rest of season 01 ------------------Season 02 <--- This folder holds all the episodes for season 02 -------------------------ShowName - s02e01 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------ShowName - s02e02 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------And so on for the rest of season 02 ------------------Season 03 <--- This folder holds all the episodes for season 03 -------------------------ShowName - s03e01 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------ShowName - s03e02 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------And so on for the rest of season 03 ---------2nd TV Show Name (Year first aired if needed) <--- This folder holds the season folders ------------------Season 01 <--- This folder holds all the episodes for season 01 -------------------------2nd ShowName - s01e01 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------2nd ShowName - s01e02 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------And so on for the rest of season 01 ------------------Season 02 <--- This folder holds all the episodes for season 02 -------------------------2nd ShowName - s02e01 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------2nd ShowName - s02e02 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------And so on for the rest of season 02 ------------------Season 03 <--- This folder holds all the episodes for season 03 -------------------------2nd ShowName - s03e01 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------2nd ShowName - s03e02 - Episode Name.ext -------------------------And so on for the rest of season 03 Note: The year after the show name is only normally needed or desired if there is more that one show with exactly the same name. Check thetvdb.com if you are not sure and match exactly the name used there. There are some exceptions to this where the year is needed even if there is no other show of that name or if the show does not have the year in TheTVDB. There are naming methods other than the above that work but this does work 99.9% of the time. Hope that helps and if I am wrong then I am quite sure there will be someone along soon to correct me. I just LOVE discipline!! Edited February 16, 2018 by Gilgamesh_48
One2Go 120 Posted February 16, 2018 Posted February 16, 2018 It works for me in a different library namely Documentaries. Under the Library Documentary I have Folders with Movies and TV Shows but I also have other folders that group Movies and TV Shows together. For example under the Documentary Library I have a Folder called "WW 1" under that folder I do have TV Show Names for example "American Experience" which contains "Season 29" which has 3 TV episodes (Eps 8, 9 & 10) discussing the US involvement in WW 1. So this is the same folder level as what the OP wants to do. Maybe my setup works as I provide all my meta data and have in the Folder "WW 1" a file Folder.xml listing under description all the content of that "WW 1" folder plus it has the other meta data like folder.jpg, backdrop.jpg and logo.png. I would be devastated if this would not work but then I am not on the latest version of Emby server ( I am on 3.2.27.0), maybe something has changed in later versions.

It's probably working for you because you might have created the library with a mixed content type, however, this comes with some drawbacks, such as not all tv features being available, and the risk of mis-detection as a different content type.

You are correct for the documentary library I did use mixed content as documentaries are never one or the other but are always a make up of collections of movies, TV series with several seasons sometimes as well as one off airings. I remember when I created that library in Emby we discussed it, since then I have locked down some of the content after initial detection. So far I am very pleased with the entire setup and feedback and display of my media content. What other TV features do you have in mind that are not available?
Happy2Play 9788 Posted February 16, 2018 Posted February 16, 2018 Sure it can with a little work on your side to the system.xml as this feature is no longer in the UI. https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/39202-help-with-complex-folder-structure/?p=367771
bflagg 2 Posted February 17, 2018 Author Posted February 17, 2018 Thank you all for your responses. I can say, layed out in my original post, Emby maintains Each Sub and season number for each. I just turned off all metadata management because I'm managing it physically in each folder. (I added a folder.jpg file for each unique series ).
