rliepins 9 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Hello all I know there have been many talks about this, but I'd like to know who recommends what for DNS regsitrar. Like many, I am behind a dynamic service (Comcast), so it should support DDNS. I'd also like to utilize SSL and have that service supply at least .pfx files. I know I can set up my own server and set up the request, etc. I actually love playing around with my own CA, but they are only specific to those that supply the certs. But I'd like to minimize that and actually use SSL for other purposes other than Emby. Please make your recommendations and please include a blurb about why. GoDaddy - doesn't support DDNS Google - supports DDNS, but do they supply .pfx? .....
Swynol 375 Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 so my setup is namecheap as my registrar. Previously i also used them for DDNS and email forwarding. Now i have moved to Cloudflare. So i point my domain to cloudflare nameservers. Cloudflare has all my A records, CNAMEs etc. They supply you with a certificate in a crt/pem and key format. you have to convert this to .pfx manually. For DNS i then use DNS-o-Matic which updates cloudflare with my WAN IP. I also use Mailgun for email forwarding for my domain name. cloudflare is a great addition as it hides your WAN IP for any visitors, adds extra security and gives you a free 15 year SSL cert. Before Cloudflare, i used namecheap as my registrar and DDNS. I then used NGINX and lets encrypt to get my certificates automatically before they expired. Lets Encrypt created crt/pem, key and the pfx files automatically every 2 months (they expire every 90 days)
rliepins 9 Posted February 8, 2018 Author Posted February 8, 2018 Mind if I ask why you switched from namecheap to cloudflare? Was it a service thing or reliability? Thanks again for the input!
Spaceboy 2573 Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 Because cloudflare hides your ip and only shows theirs. I also use this method following @@Swynol recommendation

Tur0k 148 Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 I use google domains as my domain registrar. I then use Let’s Encrypt for my SSL CA. Cloudflare is nice because they offer DDOS protection and I also hear they have low/no cost SSL certificates. I am not sure how much they charge for domain Registration.
