arche 177 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Just a suggestion, seems alot of new people migrate to the forums first for certain things and sometimes really don't look at the support page on the Emby main site. Maybe adding a Wiki shortcut tab at the top maybe will help. Just a thought.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 (edited) No one would look there though. There is one on the right side forum. It was added and same questions are still asked. Edited February 5, 2018 by Happy2Play 1
arche 177 Posted February 5, 2018 Author Posted February 5, 2018 (edited) lol, example me.. Never even noticed the text link. My fault, ok, nevermind. Feels like a "Here's Your Sign" moment for me. Edited February 5, 2018 by arche
arrbee99 1815 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Do think it should be more prominent - say above the General section, also In blue. In fact, just move the whole Having A Problem thing above General as a new section.
Guest asrequested Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I think the simplest thing is to change wiki to help. I'm willing to bet there are many people who don't understand what wiki, means. 1

That's a good idea. @@Abobader No matter where we put it, very few people will read it. This is just reality. No one reads anything . Just human nature - we are all guilty of it.

Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 It should still be there though. Thanks Abo.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 The wiki is almost impossible to find when browsing on a mobile device. I was able to find it by going to Server Windows/General and there is a tab at the top. 1
Guest asrequested Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 When you're in a forum, at the top, it has the wiki link. I think that should be 'help'.
dcrdev 255 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 (edited) I think you should remove all the stickies on these forums, consolidate the info with that of the wiki and put it on actual wiki platform like MediaWiki; leave the GitHub wiki to developer docs only. Then have a "Quick Start" guide on that wiki which is prominently linked to on the forums, website and Github. At the moment there's conflicting information on the wiki and forum stickies with either one or both being outdated/wrong. As someone who often helps people in the Linux sub section - I find myself answering the same questions over and over again, which should ideally be addressed centrally. I also think by having a dedicated wiki platform - it will encourage seasoned users to contribute to it, as oppose to having to be a designated contributor on Github. Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I'm not opposed to another wiki system but we looked at MediaWiki and it seems a little antiquated by today's standards.
arche 177 Posted February 6, 2018 Author Posted February 6, 2018 Just another idea, maybe even put the link on the admin panel somewhere, maybe even the footer of the dashboard with the other links. Unless it's somewhere else on there I am over looking. I know this doesn't help with new installs who haven't gotten that far, but again, just another idea for other users who have gotten through the install.
Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 There are links to the wiki all over the admin panel.
arche 177 Posted February 6, 2018 Author Posted February 6, 2018 There are links to the wiki all over the admin panel. The learn more links I see, I was just suggesting maybe a footer link or something to that nature. But probably just more clutter than needed.

You can have your Wiki and display it in a second location outside Github. https://github.com/gollum/gollum
Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Interesting, thanks ! I like the github wiki format because it can be easily converted to something else if we decided for example, to move it from github and onto our website. MediaWiki is html but the html is not quite as plain i would like.
Abobader 3464 Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Good day, I am really lost now somehow, are we talking regarding the top forum tabs to add a like "Wiki & Help" for example? If @@Luke and @@ebr want that, then we can add it. My best
Abobader 3464 Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Personal view here: Help never indicated to some general explain, as wiki or howto, help go in hand with "support".
Guest asrequested Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 I was just saying that there are many non-tech savvy people, that have no idea what wiki, is. I was offering a laymen terminology, that everyone is familiar with. "How To" would also work.

I like the github wiki format because it can be easily converted to something else if we decided for example, to move it from github and onto our website. MediaWiki is html but the html is not quite as plain i would like. My point wasn't specifically to suggest MediaWiki - that's just what I've found most projects to be using. My main point was that all information in the stickies and the wiki should be consolidated and then in the spirit of the term "Wiki" open it up to people to add to. Would wiki.js be an option? It also uses markdown.
Luke 42077 Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Yea wiki.js looks very interesting, thanks.
