all4dom 101 Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Hi Guys. Im trying to help a friend of mine get his network setup but he was running into some problems. He was trying to hook up a netgear fs 108 8port ethernet switch to his cable modem directly and nothing was working. I read that a ethernet switch needs to be hooked up to a router to share an ip. He has a norton core but he is not happy with it so he wanted to not use it. Can a switch be hooked up to a network extender then plugged into a cable modem or would he have to use a router as a middle man. Thanks Dom
Guest asrequested Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 (edited) What modem does he have? Is it a router, too? If it's just a modem, then he needs a router. Edited January 31, 2018 by Doofus
all4dom 101 Posted January 31, 2018 Author Posted January 31, 2018 Hey doofus...long time no talk. It's only a cable modem....no router. From what I read a switch will.not work directly plugged into a modem but I was wondering if a WiFi extender would work inste ad of a router. He hates his Norton core router & does not want to use that.
Guest asrequested Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 (edited) You can't hook a modem directly to a switch. Modem > router > switch Edited January 31, 2018 by Doofus 1
all4dom 101 Posted January 31, 2018 Author Posted January 31, 2018 Could a WiFi network extender substitue for a router?
Guest asrequested Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 No. You need a router if you want internet access.
Guest asrequested Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 If the switch is new, just take it back and get a router. They have switches built in.
mastrmind11 722 Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 And never use a consumer grade wifi extender. They're single band pieces of s*** meaning they have to either send or receive. And yes, just get a real router. The ASUS stuff is pretty solid and easy to configure. Or you could go Unifi
