I tried setting it to stereo and gpu is up to date...same issue.  I even plugged my laptop into my router.

Ok, tonight I'll try to figure out why mpv is closing. Did you try other videos?

Just to be clear, the new version doesn't error out.  It just plays very choppy.  I tried a number of 4k films, all play choppy.  1080P blu rays no problem.

Out of curiosity, what happens if you set HWA to none?

Plays a bit better with HWA off but stil unwatchable...

how old is this laptop?

hmm, about 1.5yrs old

Is it just not powerful enough for hevc? Is the server on the same machine or different machine?

His GPU supports it. I have a feeling there's something else happening. The standalone player closes after starting playback. I'd like to nail that down.

The server is on my unraid server.

That shouldn't make a difference. It's direct playing. It would only matter if your network was unbale to keep up.

To rule that out, copy the movie to your laptop and try playing in the standalone.

Ok, so you've got something environmental that we need to figure out. Tonight I want to try another build of mpv. I'll zip one up and post it. I'll try some different configs, too. MPV didn't throw an error in the log, it just closed. So something isn't stable, but I want to figure it out. Are you up for taking the time to test different things?

Sure.  I'm in eastern time zone so can do some testing after 7pm ish my time

I'm west coast, so it'll likely be around 9pm your time.

I'm around if you want to do some testing

Yup. Ok, lets set a solid baseline. Here's a link to the official mpv download. Grab the latest and unzip in the same folder as the one that I gave you. Overwrite the files, and try playing your movie, again.

Ok, that lasted about 7 seconds until it crapped out on me again.  It either totally freezes up or "stops working".  I downloaded the 64bit version as my OS is 64bit.

I even did a fresh reboot

OK, in the mpv.conf, delete 'auto' from the 'hwdec=' line, and try again

Ok, that plays and doesn't crap out.  But it's very very choppy

Ok, so I think there is something screwy with your HWA. Gimme a minute. I'm checking on something I'd like you to try

OK, add the auto back the hwdec= and then put this on another line

profile=gpu-hq

This should make it worse, but in testing with others, it actually worked. I just want to rule it out.
