Does Emby still transcode even though HDHomeRun Extend has Transcoder?

Seems the same issue occurs on my Macbook Air with OS X High Sierra with Chrome Browser. When I play the one channel I get audio/video fine but its transcoding. But all other channels I get audio only and it shows its direct streaming.

For comparison, using InstaTV app on Apple TV or HDHomeRun app on Mac OS X I get all channels perfectly with the Extend doing the transcoding.

Hi I dont see the update. Actually Im not even sure how to switch to beta channel from emby. I installed through Package Center on Synology NAS and package center is set to see Betas but Emby says its up to date in Package center.

The beta is out for most platforms but right now Synology tends to run several days behind, sorry about that.

Please try the next beta. Thanks.

When do you think that will be released?

Oh wait, thats the one I installed. Yeah, still transcodes.

Sorry this will actually be a little more difficult than I thought and we'll need more time to look at what can be done. The reason for transcoding is because the stream is detected as being interlaced, and anytime that's true, Emby will transcode to deinterlace. At least for the web app that is. Some apps can deinterlace directly in-app.

At first I thought the interlace detection might be wrong so I figured we could just alter it, but after reading HDHR documentation, the heavy transcoding profile preserves original interlacing. Therefore that means the detection is correct.

So in terms of how we can improve, there's different ways of attacking this. For starters, we could provide some in-app options to allow you to avoid the transcode to deinterlace. Unfortunately we can't just enable that by default because it will cause playback failures for other users.

On the other hand we could also add a server option to the tuner setup page to let you choose which transcoding profile you want. That would allow you to pick a lower one besides heavy, and the lower ones will deinterlace, but of course they will also be lower resolution.

A toggleable app option, if done with easy terminology/clean wording in an area that won't cause confusion is a MUCH BETTER option. No one wants a lower resolution local HD channel.
