Does Emby still transcode even though HDHomeRun Extend has Transcoder?

One reason I want to move away from Plex is because its eating up my NAS's resources by transcoding feeds from HDHR Extend when the Extend already has a transcoder. For comparison, Channels DVR ran fine on the NAS and didnt need to transcode from the Extend because the Extend took care of that. My resources with Channels DVR on the NAS were only like 20% but with Plex its 80% while transcoding!

Hi, it depends on what Emby app you're playing from. I would say most of the time no, but it might happen sometimes.

On Apple TV 4K? Channels DVR never had to. And what about scheduled recordings? Couldnt it not transcode those since it doesnt need an app on another device to play it?

On Apple TV it won't need to transcode. Recordings generally won't either if they're already h264.

Sounds great. I will be able to confirm for sure in a moment once I setup Emby and get premiere. Will reply back with results.

Thanks for the feedback.

Its transcoding :(

Transcoding
The media is being converted into a format that is compatible with the device that is playing the media.

Reason for transcoding:
Container not supported
Video codec not supported
Audio codec not supported

I set HDHomeRun Web GUI's Transcoder to both "heavy" and "none" and the problem still occurs.

Post the transcode logs.

Here you go.

Also,

Only one channel seems to even load up. The other ones are just black screen with spinning circle.

And if I enable Hardware Transcoding on my DS218+ with Quick Sync. The same channel that I atleast get buffering video now displays no video, just a blue background with the channel logo but the audio of the stream is playing fine. I see in HDHR web gui that the stream is playing as well.

The log I posted is with H/W accelleration off and HDHR Web GUI set to "heavy" for transcoding.

Ah crap, thought I hit the button. There you go.

Also I just changed to VA API instead of previous Quick Sync that I did and now I get smooth playback about 30 fps and 20% CPU usage. I guess thats not bad. Wondering why I cant use Quick Sync since my NAS has it.

But I still cannot get video on anything but that one channel.

HWA is a bit twitchy. If you want to use QS, try disabling the decoding options, and only use encoding

can you attach the emby server log as well? thanks.

In that log, QS wasn't used. That would explain the load on your CPU

Stream #0:0[0x31]: Video: h264 (High) ([27][0][0][0] / 0x001B), yuv420p(top first), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed Captions, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc
    Stream #0:1[0x34](eng): Audio: ac3 (AC-3 / 0x332D4341), 48000 Hz, 5.0(side), fltp, 384 kb/s
Stream mapping:
  Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (h264 (native) -> h264 (libx264))
  Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (copy)

Here is server log.

Also I attached another log. This is a channel that is not even loading. Just black screen with spinning circle even though HDHR web gui says tuner is streaming fine. Its a directstream log so its not transcoding but no video/audio just black screen. I also attached the server log for the directstream incase it has additional info from other server log.

Yes thats the one with H/W disabled. I dont want to use H/W if I dont have to. Plus as you can see its transcoding h264 to h264. I thought Apple TV didnt need transcoding from HDHR Extend?

I'm wondering if it's container related. Post your server log, so Luke can take a look.

I uploaded the server log in the last post. One for the direct stream channel with nothing showing. And another for the original transcoder log.

Here is server and transcoder log for channel that is displaying audio and video without buffering when I enable H/W VA API.

This is the only channel that will display audio/video. It buffers with H/W acceleration off and it streams fine with H/W acell on. No other channels load.

transcode with VA API.txt

server with VA API.txt
