Scan media library failed.

Since build 3.2.70.0 I have been getting a lot of Scan media library failed. From the Emby server I have no issue browsing to the library in question. Backups are failing as well.

Please advise.

Please attach the emby server log. Thanks.

hi, it would appear you have folders in emby library setup that are no longer valid

For the next release we'll make sure this doesn't cause the scan to fail. In the meantime I would just remove the invalid folders. thanks.

Odd. Those folder do exist. I can browse to them from the Emby server (Windows 10).

Perhaps they were down at the time this event occurred?

I doubt it. I just ran a manually scan and it throws this error. I can repeat this over and over. Again, this started with the latest build.

It also appears that new media is not updating, which makes sense if it think it cannot see my library even though it can.

Please advise.

Although based on your previous log, this is probably the issue:

2018-01-24 04:54:11.242 Info LibraryMonitor: Skipping realtime monitor for \\192.168.1.5\Fosters Media\Movies because the path does not exist

This is nothing I can advise you on. You will need to determine why Emby cannot reach those folders. The most common reasons are that the folders don't exist, or the network computer is down, or the network share is no longer valid, or permissions.

It has all the permissions it needs, Folders are not down as I can browse to them from the Emby server just fine and I can play my media, just not new media that I add. This is clearly something wrong here with how Emby is traversing these shares. However, if I map the shares (which I have done before) I am able to scan my library. So something has clearly changed.

So I think I found the issue. If I go to add another folder (share) to Emby and I browse by using the "Network" option it fails where before this was never an issue. However, as I mentioned before I am able to browse from the Windows Explorer from the Emby server to the same shares without issues. My Synology has not gone through any changes for a very long time. Last change was when I decided to move Emby to a Windows based platform and that was some time ago.

So I put Emby to blame at this point as nothing else is having issues with accessing my media on my network, just Emby.

Ok so that did not fix the issue either. I am still getting error, "The directory name is invalid" even though Emby can see the library just fine using a mapped drive. Recent adds are not showing up.

Please advise.

Is the emby server running as the same user you are accessing the shares with, or is it running as something like SYSTEM instead?

As the user logged in. The odd part is if I reboot the Emby server (Windows 10) and log back in I can run a scan successfully but after a period of time it starts to fail again. I have checked that the library storage (Synology NAS) is not shutting down or sleep in any way. It runs full boar 24/7. I also check the power management on the Emby server to see if anything is sleeping. Nothing here either. Power mode is High Performance and I made sure that all the sub settings would not allow any sleep or time outs. So again, running full boar 24/7.

There also seems to be an issue with images for the movies even though they were already download. Now they are blank tile. Where can I download the previous version?

This sounds like Windows is disconnecting the mapped drive - which it will do at its own whim.  You need to figure out how to get UNC paths working properly.

I do not think that my Windows 10 or my Synology NAS instillation is the issue. As I already mentioned that nothing has changed. However, I did remove the Emby server installation using Revo Uninstaller to ensure that everything was removed. Reinstalled Emby server and thus far everything appears to be working fine. No mapped drivers (as before the issue), no scanning errors, and the tile images have returned. It has been nearly 24 hours since the reinstall.

So this begs the question, what changes in build 3.2.70.0 from 3.2.60.0 that would cause this to occur? I see other similar reports of tile and scan issues with this build.

...and were back with "The directory name is invalid" errors again. Shouldn't Emby be able to see the same path and/or mapped drive that Windows Explorer sees? I mean I am no dev, but if I am correct all Windows apps rely on the OS to provide these resources. So if Windows can see then so should Emby.

If I reboot Windows I am able to get Emby to successfully scan the Synology NAS but something is broken here and I highly doubt it is my setup because everything else is working just fine, just not Emby.

Windows will disconnect mapped drives when idle and that's why we don't recommend using them with Emby.

I agree. However I was never using mapped drives to begin with. I used a mapped drive just to test out Emby ability to connect to my library. Currently using UNC path and I am still getting this error.

I just reviewed all the event logs on the Windows 10 for any issues and there are none. If I remove the entry for the UNC path in Emby and then add it back in, Emby just sits there and spins and spins. If I manually ad the UNC path Emby takes it just fine and the scan works, but after some period of time it starts to fail again.

I did a quick test with Plex and it is able to connect without any issues on the same Windows 10 setup that Emby is installed on. So clearly Emby has an issue here, there is no doubt. I am going to leave Plex installed for a while and continue testing over the next several days.

Again, I did not have this issue with build 3.2.60.0 so if I could get the download link for that version I will happy there until you figure out what is wrong with build 3.2.70.0

Ok so I have completey rebuilt my Windows 10 (1709) and reinstalled Emby server. Scanning is no longer throwing any errors, however it is taking forever to complete. As of this post it is currently 69% complete and I started the this about 16 hours ago.

Depending on the size of your library, location of metadata and what options are enable that sounds about right.

I disable download and chapter extraction until after initial scan as I already have metadata with media, otherwise it takes about 36+ hours to rebuild.  With options disabled it takes about 12.

I have about 20TiB of movies. I believe I did select those options. Ok so I should expect this type of performance during the initial scan.
