First off I like to say I believe Emby has what it takes to potentially beat Plex. The way Emby is intended to work is far better laid out. I enjoy the idea of using my own ssl cert and using my own domain name. I love the layout and how the subtitle system works. In fact I love just about everything about Emby but one major issue that kills it all. Your Streaming is completely unstable, unpredictable, lags, has buffer issues and apps clients aren’t updated enough to keep up with the changes of the Emby Server.

Now I know some folks on the forum will defend Emby even if I’m right but those folks need to stay out of it because I’m not even talking to you. I paid my 120 bucks so I bought the right to give whatever feedback I like.  What I have to say is directed to the code writers and not anyone else anyhow.

I have had Emby off and on for a bit over 2 years. I say I had Emby off and on because I would ask for my money back because the flaws were so bad the product was unusable. Since those times it is still relatively unusable now.  Long load times in Emby Theater and rarely on Firefox but still needs improvement. Emby server is easily confused when multiple request/commands come through and it will lag and/or sometimes crash. Sometimes Emby will just ignore commands completely but that doesn’t happen very often but I have seen it in action. So then I go to the forum and complain and I get the same’ol wrong answers and that is it’s never the fault of Emby and the issue is always pushed back to my equipment or my network and no one ever says, “Emby is having problems and were working on it”. Emby pushing issues back to the user doesn’t get the issues fixed. So I have known for some time the issues were not on my end at all but proving it can be hard to do because software, hardware, network, and the environment its running in are all factors.

So as said I know the issue is not on my end I came to the conclusion after doing extension system upgrades, using kodi and using my ftp server with steady streaming. Other streaming software as well had no issues but when I come back to Emby, it’s a complete hell. The final nail in the coffin is 3 days ago when I bought a lifetime subscription to Plex and tried it. Well I am very happy to report that all my people that have been trying to stream from me no longer have any issues. Plex’s subtitle system sucks but everything else works like a charm. So at least the primary function of Plex works well which is streaming as Emby doesn’t even have that right. Yes Transcoding was turned off by the client and the server and I had no issues on Plex. However, if streaming was working properly on Emby then Emby would be far more superior.  The thing is the features do not mean jack shit unless the primary function of the server is working perfectly meaning no long buffering, connections are fast stable and consistent (between all clients and browsers), and buffering is fast consistent and aggressive.

Problems with Emby I’m currently experiencing.

  • Unstable connectivity (long time to connect or won’t connect at all) with users externally connecting to the server using Emby Theater 2.9.6 or hardware devices like Nvidia Shield and Roku 4/Ultra. Likely due to all the changes to Emby server possibly breaking some compatibility as 2.9.6 has been out awhile and server has changed quite a bit
  • Minor connectivity issues via the browser but 90 percent of the time its fine. Firefox 57.0.4 64 bit. The reaction is the same starting the movie as with Emby theater but as stated in firefox the issue is dramatically less of an issue.
  • Inconsistent connectivity meaning it may start fine but the stream is unsteady and eventually skips or stalls out.
  • Slow starting of movie 80 percent of the time no matter the size or bitrate. Rarely the movie will start quickly and sometimes it won’t play at all and will stall.
  • Now this is more of a missing feature but is up with the fast forward only moving 1-1 ½ minutes per press? What if I wanted to fast forward 52 minutes into the moving? Does that mean I have to press the FF button roughly 35 times?, ridiculous Now I’m referring to the Android version of the Emby client for the Nvidia Shield TV 2017.

I do NOT use transcoding as I see no need for it. As fiber reaches more homes and is installed in more places transcoding is less of a need. On mobile network 4G pushes up to 60mbps (real world) and when 5G hits its suppose to get gigabit speeds so worst case scenario at least 300mbps and even on a fringe connection 40mbps should be very achievable. So again transcoding is becoming a dying need so please optimize the Emby server better for high bitrate 1080p (30mbps) and 4k video 60mbps with no transcoding. No reason to be putting an unnecessary load on the processor not to mention wear and tear, or even on a GPU.

So here are the specs:

  • Currently at the time of writing I am using Emby Beta 3.2.70.2
  • Server is on a static IP with a domain name and DDOS protection. Domain service has 17 redundant systems for speed and reliability.
  • Computer runs Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (legit copy)
  • I7-2600k with 32 gigs of g skill ddr3 2400Mhz ram @ 1600Mhz. I run fast memory slower for stability and reliability. The processor is far more than enough for streaming without transcoding.
  • Mushkin 512gb SSD and 4x2tb Hitachi enterprise raid capable drives in Raid 0 for speed of Local internal drive storage.
  • I have a fiber internet connect 250mbps up and 1gbps down using a Nokia ONT. Server is on a switch connect directly to the ONT which is a Netgear SMB JGS516PE

I think my specs are far more than enough to run the Emby software quite well. I’m sure others have far more impressive machines but this is nothing to laugh at either.

Also you’re more than welcome to ignore me but keep this in mind. People don’t like change when something works work and Plex is working very well with no issues. When people are happy it builds the brand which means people won’t want to consider using Emby if the issues aren’t resolve right away and Emby loses money. Even though Emby is donationware you still need the money to keep moving forward.

I also like to say I bought a new Nvidia Shield and love the device and everything works awesome on it and even Emby works fantastic if the goal is for it to crash 2-3 times a week. No other app has crashed since I have owned the Nvidia Shield except for Emby.  Plex hasn’t crash not even one time yet.

I don’t use On-The-Fly transcoding and never will and I think the biggest issue is it seems Emby isn’t putting effort in optimizing streaming and playback for those who do not want to use transcoding On-The-Fly. Please improve Emby server and the supporting clients such as Emby theater and others to working properly and reliably without the transcoder being used. Finally the last I hear the limitations of Emby were quite restrictive and should readjust them as your competitor Plex has a limit of 15 home devices (DLNA) but you get to create up to 100 user accounts and each account is allowed to have up to 20 concurrent streams. So at this time overall Plex is the better deal.

P.S. I know you may ask for a log and will give you one in a couple days. However, once you receive the log then I’m done. Meaning I will not follow up with you I’m too busy to play “Software Tester” So unless you’re putting me on the payroll a log is the best you’re getting.

You are completely dismissing format incompatibilities which is the most common reason for needing to transcode something.

You can jump by chapter points both before (start from a chapter) and during (skip to different chapter points) playback in that app.  Have you seen that?  Even for items that don't have actual defined chapters, we create them at 5 min intervals so, in your example you could get to 52 mins with just a few clicks.

I can control the format as I have transcoding software and I can control the bitrate myself by setting the limits for the output file. If the file needs transcoding then I do not want it to play at all. I use H.264 MP4 with 2 channel AAC which is the most supported format around. For audio I hate MP3 so for lossy I use Opus which is supported by firefox, Chrome and most newer mobile phone and that goes for FLAC as well. So again I don't need transcoding and I do not want the processor or GPU load on my machine and would rather have the person not be able to play the file rather than it being On-the-Fly transcoded. I'm not the only person which feels that way as many others want the same thing so please shut the transcoder up your tailpipe as I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT IT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!

I'm severely tired of people trying to defend the damn On-The-Fly transcoder. If that is what other people want to use then fine but other have different set-ups, needs, and expectations. I already know the benefits and downfalls of using or not using the On-The-Fly transcoder and for my needs and expectations having the transcoder disabled at all times permanently is the best choice which fits my needs. So stop trying to convince that the transcoder is a plus as I don't see it and don't want it, EVER!

My goal is to get Emby Server to function well without the transcoder for the part of the community that doesn't want or need the transcoder.

We have settings that allow you to disable transcoding at the server level.

Rather have a more traditional FF like most other apps and even Plex has a more traditional "Press and hold" FF option. I mean Plex can do it why can't you?

Yes you absolutely do but for whatever reason it isn't functioning well in that mode. I have notice unstable connectivity and unsteady streaming. I actually can see the streaming dipping very low and spiking high like some connectivty issue is interferring with the connection but I know its not my network as everything else is functioning perfectly. A bug exist when it comes to the connectivity when the transcoder is disabled. I watched Plex's streaming traffic and it aggressive, consistent and stable as the data doesn't dip much and a steady stream is being sent. I have had 5 people that were using Emby have issues and those same 5 people on plex and everything is fine. Also yes they are using a direct stream as the server and the client are set for direct stream only and no transcoding is taking place. Lastly the are the same movies and same computer that is streaming the files. So the issue is definitely in the software in Emby server. The bug is very pronounce in Emby theater but can also sometimes be seen using firefox. Emby users cannot connect rarely or at all Using Emby theater as well. However plex media player is working like a charm and again on the same computer with the same files.

Why? I already report with logs once and nothing ever got fixed. You know what the definition of insanity is? It's doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I'll do your insane request for a second time but I seriously hope it is taken serious and repaired.

now you may say well its on your end and its a certificate issue and you would definitely be WRONG!

the above picture that is showing a secure connection is my machine on a different public port. Yes it will connect very slowly and video load times are typically but not always slow so I'm barely able to make a connection myself. Also DLNA is completely disable this is all internet connectivity. BTW all transcoding is off I never use On-The-Fly Transcoding, Ever! On-The-Fly Transcoding doesn't even exist in my mind. Also I need to point out that 75 percent of the time via Emby Theater it will connect but even so the streaming skips and is very unstable. Sometimes it will start fine and play fine but if you fast forward or rewind or do anything the interrupts the playback then it goes all to hell and start skipping. Emby Theater 2.9.6. In Firefox 57.0.4 64 bit the issue is far less dramatic but still exist. Connectivity is more stable as far as connection and playback is much better but still can skip at times and the higher the butrate it can go all to hell. Again my internet is fiber 250mbps up and 1gbps down but here's a link for speedtest for your enjoyment. http://www.speedtest.net/result/6994533503

To put everything short Emby Server Has some SSL support issues and Emby theater has its own connectivity issues. This is a 2 part issue.

click into one of those videos, and on the detail screen, use the 3-dot menu to download the entire video file. how fast does this go?

Posted (edited)

well I tried this externally from a friend's computer and it went full rate of his connection which was 75mbps but this was through Firefox v58. Even through Emby theater 2.9.6its 75mbps. Movies and music are still slow to start in Emby Theater and connect will sometimes fail due to it.

my A record is fine I just checked it. I don't where your getting multiple ips but my server is on a static and the domain is set to that static. This machine is on a different IP which is dynamic. I'm on fiber I get all the dynamics I can handle but only one static. Everything is set to the static. I run other server software with no issues.

C:\Users\Jason>nslookup www.jaysshit.com

Server:  dns1.qservco.com

Address:  208.38.252.3

Non-authoritative answer:

Name:    www.jaysshit.com

Address:  208.38.242.246

BTW what you are seeing is my dns address, lol The second one is my real address.

strange, one of the IPs is pointing to namecheap registrar where your domain is registered. the static IP i can see connects to your server fine, both emby and your ftp site.

if you can try to get Emby Theater to connect and make a note of the time, then post your server log somewhere, pastebin or just attach it here, will have a look at it.

of course an ip is pointing to namecheap that where I have my domain and my SSL is based on my domain name not my IP.

ye i can see your ftp, i know your domain is with namecheap. but when doing a DNS lookup on your domain name it replies with 2 IPs. Looking at it more closely now, i think its the MX records for your emails thats giving me the second IP address.

2 important things to REMEMBER when streaming. How is your NIC card and wireless set up do they obtain the connectrion address automatically??  for the best streaming results one should set the IP and DNS for earch computer on the home network this will make things MUCH FASTER and responsive since its not assigning IP's and dns's  EXAMPLE a home network Router might be set like.

IP's Local

192.168.0.2

255.255.255.0

192.168.0.1

Dns GOOGLE

8.8.4.4

8.8.8.8

So simply assigning the addresses to your home computers will make things MUCH FASTER and smooth

the 1st ip is the one your setting to the computer my laptop is 192.168.0.30 then everything else as seen above is the same for each computer example

computer one

192.168.0.30

255.255.255.0

192.168.0.1

dns

8.8.4.4

8.8.8.8

now some people will understand that if you take the laptop to a public hotspot you will need to set the IP's to obntain the ip's automatically and leave the dns as shown above, when returning home just put the ip's back for the home network

192.168.0.30

255.255.255.0

192.168.0.1

THIS ALSO WORKS FOR MOBILE DEVICES AND TABLETS ETC

ENJOY

Everything is hardwired and the static is manually assigned. Granted some work for response and connectivity are still needed for Emby Theater but I did find the source of the issue. The processor voltage was a bit low @ 1.170 and is suppose to be 1.2 I now have it @ 1.21 now but it seems when the processor was dragging when the initial connection was going slow and had issues. Due to lack power that was unavailable to handle the task as SSL tasks are a bit taxing and intial connections are as well are the reasons for long connects and some failures. The nic card is an intel i210 server nic. Also no router involve this is to a switch, again no router.

So does this mean the problem was actually not in Emby at all?
