wkerr0730 0 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Hi All - Sometimes when watching content the framerate will get 'choppy' or just 'incorrect'. It can sometimes happen randomly, it may happen at the start of a film / TV shows, or if a buffer event occurs. My TV is an LG C7 and the Nvidia shield 2017 is running through my Denon amp. In the Emby app I have 'Enable Refresh Rate Switching' and 'Prefer Exact Refresh Rate' checked. This has happened across MANY different items. The server is across the internet. The app version is 1.5.32g Registered and the server version is 3.2.70.0 Any input appreciated.
Luke 42078 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 @@wkerr0730 please let us know if this makes any difference. thanks !
wkerr0730 0 Posted January 21, 2018 Author Posted January 21, 2018 Wouldn't that make it do a pull down? That seems counter intuitive to what I want, unless I'm not understanding it correctly. It tends to happen on higher bitrate content, or when maybe there is a blip in the network between client and server.
Luke 42078 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 hi, we're just asking these questions to try and isolate where the issue is. thanks !
wkerr0730 0 Posted January 21, 2018 Author Posted January 21, 2018 Okay cool. I will test and report back. Its tough to isolate because its so sporadic.
wkerr0730 0 Posted January 21, 2018 Author Posted January 21, 2018 The other issue I'm seeing here is when I try to play a very large file it will come up on Transcode. If I restart Emby and try again it will usually come up Direct Play.
CBers 7450 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I have a 2017 nVidia Shield connected to my LG C7V TV and don't have any playback issues. I don't use the "Enable Refresh Rate Switching" setting. It's probably something to do with streaming across the internet. What download/upload speeds do you have between your server and client? What bitrate setting do you have set in the ATV app?
wkerr0730 0 Posted January 21, 2018 Author Posted January 21, 2018 @@CBers doesn't that mean when you watch movies at 23.97 / 24hz that you get the pulldown affect? Why would you not enable it to get the exact framerate as our TV supports it.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I've seen this happen to me and from what I recall it only happens when refresh rate switch is enabled. Often pausing then playing fixes it, temporarily at least.

Don't know what you mean. 4K and 1080 videos play without issue. 4K content forces the TV to switch correctly. I assume, probably wrongly, that your playback is being transcoded as it's going over the internet?

This causes a jerky unsmooth video that is especially noticeable Durning scenes where the camera pans. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-two_pull_down The next reason is to be able to set your Shield TV to 2160p in the system settings but have your display switch to 1080p when playing non 4k content to makes use of your displays superior upscalers. CBers 7450 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I must have an "untrained eye", as I "cannot see the addition of this extra video field".
Jdiesel 1431 Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) Depending on the motion settings enabled on your display it may be doing a form or frame blending or interpolation. Also some people just aren't sensitive to it. Edited January 21, 2018 by Jdiesel

Luke 42078 Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 We'll have to see what @@ebr thinks. As far as transcoding/not transcoding, please discuss an example and attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !
ebr 16177 Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 The pull-down on modern displays is really quite good and can be better than trying to match the frame rate exactly in my experience. That's why I suggested trying that. Thanks.
wkerr0730 0 Posted January 22, 2018 Author Posted January 22, 2018 @ebr That did seem to solve the problem (although again I can't say 100% as its so intermittent) I did play a large rip for over an hour and had no issues. However I don't know if I agree with you it can be 'better' then a native frame-rate. Do you have any articles to support that stance?

Jdiesel 1431 Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 @@ebr I know there are already a few options specific to refreshrate rate switching but what are your thoughts on having a check box that limits the switching to resolution only? For example, the valid modes would be 2160p59, 1080p59, and 720p59. I am one of those who prefers my displays motion control over exact refreshrate matching as it has similar results without the occasional lipsync issues but still wants to take advantage of using my displays scalers versus the Shield TV's.
