swhitmore 781 Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) So have ages now I've been having issues with stuttering video on my Surface Pro 4 with using UWP Emby Theater. Here is a video I made a year ago displaying the problem. It was narrowed down to an issue with the video player that UWP uses, as the same stuttering was found with other UWP apps e.g. Film & TV or Ember, but not with desktop apps such as Windows Media Player, or Emby Theater desktop. I first noticed a difference with the video stuttering when making changes to my SP4 using this guide: How to max out the Intel HD graphics on Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. What I found was that after making the changes described and then even returning the power profile back to normal, the issue with the video stuttering was gone. I ended up narrowing it down to the fact that I had forgot to re-enable Connected Standby. I did some more tests and determined that each time I enabled Connected Standby and rebooted, the stuttering would return. Vice versa, when disabling it and rebooting, the stuttering would vanish. This is done by changing the CsEnabled Value data from 1 to 0 in the registry here HKEY_Local_Machine\System\ControlSet001\Control\Power. These are some screenshots with 'stats for nerds' turned on at the start of the video. The first screenshot is with Connected Standby turned on. Notice that the after 2mins there are over 1500 dropped frames. Also notice that there is no buffering indication in the play bar. In this next screenshot, Connected Standby is disabled. After 2 mins there are only 14 dropped frames, and all of those were in the first few seconds. Notice that the play bar also shows that the video is actually buffering now. These observations happen every time I toggle Connected Standby on or off. Unfortunately I can't tell you why this happens, but I'd like to know if anyone else with a Surface Pro 4 who has this issue can also test. Edited January 14, 2018 by swhitmore
swhitmore 781 Posted January 14, 2018 Author Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) Well done ! Thanks @@Luke glad to have this issue finally resolved. Any ideas why buffering would completely fail with Connected Standby turned on? I'd be interested in anyone using Ember can also test. @@7illusions Edited January 14, 2018 by swhitmore
