Emby as a Service not working?!??!

Hello, seems either in the last update that running Emby as a service natively in Windows is no longer working.

I have searched the forums and found a post saying to use a 3rd party application NSSM in order to run Emby as a service.

To me this is not a solution, why do we need to use a 3rd party application to do something that Windows supports natively.

@@Luke Can you please restore this basic functionality in the next release of Emby Server?

I understand that most users do not use Emby as a Service, but I am sure if you asked most of the advanced users do run Emby as a service.

I should not have to login to my server just to make Emby run, it should run automatically as a service when the OS starts, running a service has existed in Windows for years and for you to remove this now makes no sense at all.

Please Please Please @@Luke restore this basic functionality!

Hi @@dcook, windows task scheduler is also another option to achieve the same goal that doesn't require third party software. just make sure to use the same -service command line argument.

@@Luke, running via task scheduler is not a 100% solution. If you log on to the server machine and use the web interface the play and trailer buttons are missing. Please consider bringing back the service installation.

The play and trailer buttons won't have anything to do with task scheduler. As always we're happy to help. Please see how to report a problem. Thanks !

Running as a service is tried and test proven method that works 100% of the time, I never have to login to my server I know that its always going to run when the OS boots up.

I should not have to install 3rd party applications or setup a task scheduler.

I do not want to login to my server, I probably login maybe once every 4 months to do windows updates, Emby Service worked just fine.

Now its not working.

I started the Emby Server application last night manually and today I discovered it was not running again, my server did not reboot or anything so it should have still been running but it was not.

Running Emby as a Service is the best way to make sure its always working

Please restore this, as I said its existed in Windows for years and years and is proven and tested, I don't think anyone wants to setup scheduled tasks or 3rd party applications.

The issue is everyone blames Emby when every major Windows update delete the Emby service.  I personally see it easier to use 3rd party and not have to worry about Windows screwing it up again.

I never blamed Emby, as I said running as a service I think you will find that its mostly advanced users who set it up that way.  We know how to set user permissions and restore the service if Windows Updates messes it up.

By Emby removing the option to run as a service is not right.  It worked fine all these years and its not right to make people install a crappy 3rd party application when it worked fine before.

Agree with dcook. Coding a Windows service should be well documented and easier to add than all the complex stuff the Devs do.

Apologies for adding to this thread but the scheduled task method does not work 100%. I doubt it is a server issue, feels more like the task has no console connection.

A log file attached for @@Luke in case it helps.

I had never heard if NSSM before the Emby devs introduced it as a solution to run any app as a service. It's a very easy process and only takes a few minutes to set up once and forget about it.

I find it to be much more stable with Windows 7 than the previous service solution. I haven't had any trouble starting or stopping it on demand and I have yet to see it crash on me since setting it up.

You really should give it a shot and see for yourself if it's any better or worse.

@@Luke, does the browser console help with any pointers why the play and trailer buttons disappear?

Not expecting an immediate fix but would be keen to hear if the cause of the problem can be identified and there is hope for the scheduled task approach in a future release.

I'm not quite sure. Haven't seen this before, but I'm making a couple adjustments to try and avoid what might be causing this. Please try again with the next release of emby server. thanks.

Not sure how it got there, but I have a service called Emby Server, and it's set to Automatic and no longer runs.  Points to

"C:\Users\jriker\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\system\MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe" -service

But the MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe doesn't exist.  So not sure if this is some legacy thing Emby got rid of at some point but never cleared up the service.  Sounds like a step backwards in theory.  Had a service to start it, now it doesn't.

Thanks.

Yes you can just delete or disable that service. Thanks.
