Can't Play HEVC Content - Spinning Circle

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

As the title really.

Theater doesn't seem to want to play any of my HEVC files.  If I disable HW acceleration they play (poorly) but with HW acceleration on Auto I just get a spinning circle and no playback, forcing me to quit Theater and restart it.

They play perfectly well through the web interface (server is on the same machine) and MPC-HC plays them fine too.

Any ideas?

Probably worth adding that the box is an i5 Broadwell NUC.

Are you using the store app?

Don't think so.  Downloaded it from the website years ago and have just updated it since.

Oh you're using the legacy app? If yes, you need to go get the current app.

It's still current isn't it?

I'm on version 2.9.6

Can we see the emby server log? thanks.

That's strange. it never even really gets to the point of trying to play. If you restart the emby theater app, does this still happen?

Posted

Yep. Restarting the app, the server and even the pc makes no difference.

have you customized any other video playback settings in the app? I would try setting everything back to default. thanks.

I think everything is on default / auto, but I can have a look tonight when I get home.

Great, thanks.

Actually, could I achieve the same effect by just uninstalling and reinstalling Theater?

I was going to suggest a clean install. What GPU do you have?

Posted

I uninstalled Theater, ticking all the boxes to clear down the data.

Reinstalled again from scratch and it stil has the same issue ;  plays with no HW acceleration, but nothing with auto HW acceleration.

The GPU is the onboard Intel one.  The processor is an i5 5250U (link) which has the HD6000 GPU.

It has worked previously which is the odd thing as I'm certain I've watched these episodes through Emby previously.

So if it plays with no hwa, then why not just play and enjoy the show?

Try auto copyback, and see what happens.

Hi

I think as he wrote in first post

I may have to set you up with some logging and then I can see where it's falling down.

Cool, just let me know what you need.

Click attach file, and describe what you did and settings you tried

Doh, browsed to the file, but didn't click the button.  Now attached.

That was a clean Theater install, HW acceleration to Auto and trying to play the episode.

It hid the Emby interface, showed the backdrop for the series with a spinning circle that just sat there doing nothing.
