fbrassin 47 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Hello, as i would like to try adjust my movies to not make my server transcoding them i would like to understand what causing trancoding. Can you help me to understand where to watch in the log cause of transcoding? My server has got ubuntu 16.04 My client ATV4 Here is log of trascoding: https://paste2.org/epa7IJvv Tnx
thatoneguy99 33 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 (edited) This may help but not so sure. When you’re in the dashboard and see the currently playing items that are transcoding, there is a little info icon. Clicking on this should bring up another window that will tell you the reason it is transcoding. More often than not it is because of format. I recently started using mp4automator to turn everything into mp4 format and this has greatly reduced my transcoding. Another reason could be because of bandwidth options. If someone has a lesser connection it will transcode to a lower bitrate to be able to watch it. With mp4s even when they do transcode because of bitrate it seems to be less taxing on my CPU. Luke 42077 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 - apple doesn't support mkv container - subtitles are being burned in if you want to avoid all use of ffmpeg, switch to mp4 and add external subtitles.

That is strange, there are some .mkv that on ATV i can watch in direct stream or romux, no transcoding. Which are the differences from the previous one? Here are two examples: direct stream https://paste2.org/bEVXX8Ox Remux https://paste2.org/Ms11P80s
fbrassin 47 Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 I cannot understand why this movie was transcoded https://paste2.org/epa7IJvv While this was remuxed https://paste2.org/Ms11P80s That movies seems to have the same codecs for video and audio. What i don't understand? I'm confused
ebr 16169 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 The first one has forced subs that were selected by default. The second one doesn't.
fbrassin 47 Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 But i tried to start both in the same way, pressing play botton without changing anything. In playing settings i have smart subtitles. For the remuxed movie i could see subtitles. And none of the 2 movies has got external subtitles. This is what i cannot understand.
ebr 16169 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 The first one has forced subs that were selected by default. The "smart" subtitle setting is going to select forced subs for display when you play something - unless you have played it previously and turned them off manually. The fact they are burning in must mean you have the option to extract internal subs turned off.
fbrassin 47 Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 (edited) The fact they are burning in must mean you have the option to extract internal subs turned off. Where is this option? Do you mean option in emby? Edited January 9, 2018 by fbrassin
