Suggestions for new multimedia infrastructure setup

Hi,

Just looking for some advise onto how best to integrate emby into my current multimedia setup. Appreciated.

Current setup:

Many different devices running latest kodi and all using a central MySQL DB for management of all media.

So do I use the emby server as central media management tool instead of the current MySQL DB setup and install emby kodi add-on on the different kodi boxes to retrieve data from emby server?

Is that all to it? Or am I missing anything important?

Thanks for feedback

Sure, well the first step before doing anything is to install the server emby. Setup metadata options. Add your libraries. Once this is done and you see your content in the webclient, you can then setup one Kodi device.

You have two options for kodi. You can use Embycon, which uses dynamic listings to bring your Emby content to Kodi. It does not require syncing content. It supports Movies and tvshows.

You can use Emby for Kodi which syncs your Emby content to the Kodi library. This method takes longer to get setup because it has to sync your movies, tvshows, musicvideos, music to Kodi. But you can copy your userdata to each Kodi setup (if you do that, generate a new device id once per device (not per profile) via the addon settings > advanced.

It works as one emby user/one Kodi profile.

I believe this answers your question. Feel free to ask for help if you get stuck. Obviously, if you have issues setting up your emby server, ask in the server section of the forum for quicker help on the matter. :)

Thanks for your time in answering my question!

Looks like I was on the ball. :-)

So this means that currently I would have to go back from a central organized media management system to a semi-local version when using Emby for kodi as Embycon does not yet support all media content? It would be great if they would in the near future as it makes more sense to me to have this centralized for this kind of setup.

btw do you know if emby for kodi automatically syncs new and updated content from the emby server to the kodi box. Or does it need manual action from user?

Any other cons or pros when comparing the two add-on apps? What is your personal experience using them?

Thanks

Yes, everything is local to the profile. But the information comes from your emby server. You can still centralize artwork if you need, just not the database themselves.

When you start Emby for Kodi, if you have the fast sync server plugin installed, it will pull the recorded updates and process them in Kodi, otherwise it will do a manual sync (which takes longer, comparing your database to emby). Once Emby for Kodi is running, any updates are "live updates" and will processed immediately when the server broadcasts it.

I don't think null_pointer has any intentions of expending the list of supported media for Embycon. It's meant to be fast to setup and get running.

With Emby for Kodi, it's really to use Kodi features with your Emby content. Since the content is imported directly to the Kodi database, it will behave as a regular Kodi setup, but the add-on maintains your content automatically.

@ See. I know music is a pain, but it might not be that bad with dynamic listings :)

Hi, have just installed the emby for Kodi app on a Kodi device. I followed the instructions, and selected the recommended options.

However, the movies and tv shows are not shown in the Kodi interface. I went to the emby for Kodi settings and did a local sync as well just in case and a repair local DB, however it tells me that it was successful within 0.00 seconds. seems wrong. :-)

The fast sync plugin is also installed on the emby server and premium membership is active.

What am I missing?

Thanks

UPDATE: Kodi needed a reboot for the emby sync to start! Its is syncing now. Keep you posted.

A restart was required? Interesting, can you walk me thru what happened?

I tested a new install and didn't need to restart for the sync to work.

If I remember correctly (doing lots of things at the same time. :-))

Install emby repository

Install emby for Kodi from repository

Clicked it to open and this triggered the select server and user login

After successful login, it asked a few questions related to the config. If not mistaken, the option for add-on or direct video streaming. Than if I wanted to enable music streaming followed if I wanted to have the music played from outside of network.

And than that was it.

I checked movies in Kodi, but nothing was populating. Than I went into the emby for Kodi config settings and checked if all was set ok.

Than I clicked on the emby for kodi app itself and scrolled down to the section "perform manual scan" and checked it. It gave a message top right corner that it took 0.00 seconds but nothing populated

Than clicked on "Perform local database reset" nothing happened in movies.

Than clicked on "Repair local database" and also gave a 0.00 seconds message. but no movies shown in Kodi.

I than restarted Kodi as I was doing something else and when it opened up again, it suddenly went and synced the database as could be seen in the right top corner and the movies appeared soon after in kodi.

Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll review the process after the questions, to make sure everything starts. :)

Or just put a popup after questions, telling them to restart Kodi. :-)

Yeah, if I can't figure this out. It's just strange that I don't have that issue. What version of Kodi are you using and the platform it's running on?

Just FYI, in the meantime @ did add music to EmbyCon - but as he said it is different from the native Kodi experience.

@null_pointer I just did another install of emby for Kodi on a windows 7 sp1 and it ran the sync without having to reboot. Must have been related to the operation system, had problem on latest Ubuntu before. Same computer.

Ok, well I'll still add a small warning (if the sync doesn't start, restart Kodi).

Thanks for the update
