Chapter Extraction Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm trying to troubleshoot issues with chapter extractions for my BD library which are all M2TS filename extensions.  Mediainfo shows chapters in the files but they are not always extracted.  Emby server extracts some but not all with the same mediainfo details.  Why would Emby not extract properly if the files contain the metadata.

Thx

Hi, are these organized in your library as m2ts video files, or are they bluray folder rips?

Howdy,

All are BD folder rips, some movies Emby extract and others do not. However, Media info shows that chapters exist in the files.  Please see attached file showing example,e of a movie that Emby fails to extract  but shows in Media-info.

Thx

Media info Chapters but no Emby extraction.html

Ok sorry, chapter image extraction is disabled for folder rips as it is too problematic. You are certainly free to use folder rips, but for a full featured experience consider converting to plain video files.

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Are you then suggesting MKV.H265.10bit for full featured experience?

Yes MKV is a great option.

Still does not explain why some of my folder rips show chapters?  If disabled, why do some work?  The other part of this is I am using the AFTV app interface for playback.  What I see for movies without chapters, is when pressing the FWD search button results in an error message  "unable to seek" the player interface is also missing the resume graphic.

They were probably generated a while ago when the feature was enabled.

If we can't seek we also cannot resume.  All of that points to a lack of proper media info for the item which certainly can be the case with folder rips.

You really should look to convert these but I would suggest h264 over h265 just for speed and wider support.  Disc space is cheap.

Just to add to @@ebr's suggestion, you can also rip to MKV and not convert at all.  That's how my collection is setup.  That presumes you have playback devices that can handle that but if you've been using folder rips you likely do.  Both ET on Windows and the Android TV client on a Shield have handled every file I've thrown at them without transcoding.  Every other client will likely require some transcoding for some files if you do this.  VC-1 and the built-in subs aren't widely supported among the other client devices for example.
