LG Streaming Profiles Compatibility Issue

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was testing this app to see what files could be direct played. It looks like the TV can handle all video formats and most audio formats (still waiting to test TrueHD which I don't think will work)

The issue I discovered is that the only way to get the server to direct play some of these files is to disable video/audio/and remuxing for the user. It seems from the logs that the server checks the TVs profiles for compatibility, doesn't find it so it starts to transcode/remux.

Whatever method is being used to detect compatibility on these TVs looks to be incorrect.

Is this a known issue?

Here are the logs. In this example I first played The Expendables 3 (2014) under a user account that had video/audio/remuxing disabled. It direct played, this file has a TrueHD audio stream.

I then enabled video/audio/remuxing and after pressing play the screen was black for about 30 seconds while the server switched from direct play to transcoding. The transcode began and the video started playing.

So even though the file can be direct played the server for some reason doesn't see this capability in the TVs profiles so it forces transcoding.

Ok, what model LG is this?

OLED55C6P So the LG 2016 Model.

Do you have an audio receiver that supports truehd? when you force direct play does the truehd get passed all the way to your receiver? thanks.

Audio is being played through the TV's speakers. Which must be getting converted by the TV? So I think the TV accepts the codec but converts it for playback.

My understanding is that only 2017 models support TrueHD passthrough.

Yea I think we'll have to adjust the app for the new models, thanks.

Thanks for looking into it!

Hey, just to weigh in. I have a new 43UJ670V 2017 TV, I've edited the LG DLNA profile to allow direct play for all, however it still transcodes for anything with TrueHD audio too (also, if I try to change audio source on a movie with multiple audio tracks to a non TrueHD emby crashes)

Let me know if there's any info I can provide to help :)

The dlna profile won't affect the app. Thanks.

Hi all,

I'm on a 2017 b7 OLED with emby v104 and have no issues direct playing HEVC 4k video by editing the DLNA profile, but trueHD and DTS-HD will not pass thru. I get downgraded to plain DD5.1 or DTS.

Apologies if this has already been covered. My understanding is that the 2017 models can pass thru these formats. Is that correct? Limitation of the emby app?

Thanks,

I believe no 2017 can do DTS-HD,

The manual is accurate. Marketing website is not

HDMI Audio Supported Format: DTS (44.1 kHz / 48 kHz), Dolby Digital / Dolby Digital Plus (32 kHz / 44.1 kHz / 48 kHz), PCM (32 kHz / 44.1 kHz / 48 kHz / 96 kHz / 192 kHz) (Depending on model)

Dolby TrueHD was recently added in Oct 2017 firmware

Thanks for the info !

Thanks guys.

In that case, TrueHD will still not pass thru, it is downgraded to DD5.1

Let me know if I can gather any additional info to help.

maybe try the movie on a USB stick and play with the LG media player, to confirm your TV can play TrueHD

So I went back and tried running my ps4 through the b7 OLED with pass thru audio to my marantz reciever. Result is: both TrueHD and DTS-HD will not work. DTS-HD downgrades to DTS and TrueHD just outputs static.

Both of these test movies light up the proper audio when directly connected thru the receiver.

The tv is running os version 4.70.36 from December.

Long story short, the emby app may not be the issue here. I think the b7 (2017) still has a problem with passing thru TrueHD.

Thanks for the feedback.

are you trying to passthrough TrueHD to your AMP via ARC, that will not be possible until HDMI 2.1 with eARC. HD audio is not supported in ARC via HDMI 2.0, on ANY device, is is not supported the the standard.

Thanks Andy, that makes sense. Just to be clear -- does that also mean that emby running on the LG TV with audio output to a receiver with HDMI would be considered ARC and suffer the same limitation?

My ultimate goal here is to play 4k HEVC content with uncompressed audio via emby on the LG TV. Possible?

yes, this will not be possible until 2019, LG have no plans releasing a TV with HDMI 2.1 in 2018, the standard was ratified too late. And imo DTS-HD and TrueHD / Atmos for a tv without a A/V receiver is just a sales gimmick.
