Any alternatives to using NSSM?

I am not keen on using NSSM to create a serivce for Emby, The name is terrible and does not sound a valid item for Emby to be recommending.

In Windows there is the SC command line program. Can I use SC to create an Emby service?

You can also create a scheduled task that runs emby.  Set the option to load on startup and you will have to allow it to run even if not logged in.

You can also use Windows task scheduler to launch the server on startup, and check the box "run whether the user is logged on or not".

Make sure to use the -service command line param.

Thanks naeonline and Luke,

I tried using SC from the command line, it worked as in it created the registry keys and a service entry but starting the service would then simply fail.

I have created a scheduled task that runs at startup. This is working fine.

Not sure why a scheduled task of EmbyServer.exe -service works but a service created with the same EmbyServer.exe -service fails.

I can live with using the Scheduled Task approach. Really would like Emby to bring back the service option properly and not pass this off to some odd, third-party piece of software.

Because the executable does not have Windows Service support embedded, so that's why you can't use sc.exe.

The scheduled task will help you achieve the same end goal though of running in the background.

I also don't understand why a program like Emby would have to recommend 3rd. party software to run as a service.

But on the other hand NSSM is one of the better known and often used solutions for running normal programs as a service. It has a long track record (7 years). The somewhat silly name comes from a time when the alternatives where lacking and also often pricey commercial solutions.

Honestly this is pretty disappointing to me. I don't recall ever seeing a software company suggest using a third party app to create a service for its product (although I'm sure some have). Normally either running as a service isn't recommended or the application has a built-in mechanism for creating the service. In the case of Emby, the service creation was part of the installation process. Not sure what the reason behind going backwards is but I don't see that as a good sign.

So far I've been impressed with Emby but this change took me by surprise. My service was wiped after the latest update. I used the NSSM tool and it works without issue, but asking users to download additional software and perform steps outside of the typical installation to provide functionality that used to be included is a bit annoying.

Also, I paid for a premiere subscription to support Emby, because it is a great application. If this was the recommendation back when I originally started using it I probably wouldn't have paid for the subscription at the time assuming that it was still too early in it's development. I'd like to see the service creation added back in.

Just my two cents.

Thanks for the feedback. It's always possible for the future.

I have tried for several hours to do this and i just can't seem to get the hang of it. I tried nssm and i got lost with all of the 'computer language', to say the least, there is no way i'll be able to set up emby and windows together. I 'left' Plex, but dang, at least when i would upload a movie, it would simultaneously show on Plex, kinda wish Emby had that at least...

@@Esme have you tried enabling the real-time monitor option for each of your emby libraries?

This was a complaint BEFORE switching to this "platform".

It's absolutely unacceptable, IMO.
