Server hangs and will not restart for update 3.2.60.0

Happy Holidays all,

My server app is set to automatically update and yesterday it stated in my client that the emby server needs to restart due to the update.  I did this 3 times in a row before checking the server to which is just sits telling you it may be a few minutes.  35 minutes later we were still at wait a few minutes.

Today I attempted to download and install manually to which I was notified that "my administrator blocked it due to potential security risk" and canceled install.  My antivirus hasn't been changed since I initially set my parameters.  I use Norton (win7 64)and have only had a few hiccups in the past that were eventually sorted out.  So maybe I am missing something or is this a known issue under investigation?

Thanks

Hi, sounds like a false positive. You may need to override your anti virus to allow it. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

How do I override my nortons?

Posted

to reiterate, the server upon restart hangs and will not restart.  So I manually tried the download which is when I get the message "my administrator blocked it due to potential security risk" and canceled install.  I haven't changed anything in Nortons and it has never had a problem with installs?

Can you try shutting down Norton and then run the installer again? Thanks.

Same here, no anti virus. I kept wondering why server was randomly shutting down. Found out it was trying to update but not restarting.

Adding another me too, FWIW.

Win 10 Pro. Somewhat inconvenient over the holiday as I had to keep running to restart Emby manually and ended up stopping it trying to update to 3.2.60.0. Server stuck on 3.2.36.0 for now.

My Emby server machine is close to stock (but with all MSFT updates), a 92TB Storage Pool, and a Plex Server running. No antivirus on this machine.

Frank.

The problem would seem to be your ClickOnce settings. From my post in a different thread about this issue:

Here's what I went through. Server would shut down because it couldn't finish (restart) the update. So, downloaded from website. Tried to install, got security message I could not install. So, more checking around to solve that. Found out the ClickOnce settings (.NETFramework\Security\TrustManager\PromptingLevel) were all set to Disabled. Changed all but Untrusted sites to Enabled. Then tried Restart from Web Interface. Watched the colored circles for 5 minutes and gave up on Restart. Went back to download, got another security message, though with option to run. Installed alright, but got message a further Restart was needed for XML something or the other. So, hit Restart, and voila, it restarted. Seems to have solved the problem with Server shutting down.

This is the first time I've had a problem with an auto-update, as well as the first time I've gotten the security message when trying to install something from the Web, so I don't know if the two are connected. That it wouldn't let me run the installer though, seems to point to the ClickOnce settings as being the culprit. To check yours: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\.NETFramework\Security\TrustManager\PromptingLevel (more info: https://msdn.microso...y/ee308453.aspx )

Further, I'm on Win 7 Pro 64-bit, fully updated.

Thanks PBzeer.  Outstanding directions as a manual update will not work until this is done as you described.

1.  Do as he states above

2. Then do a manual download and install

have a great new year!

Thanks, glad it worked for you. Considering all I had to do to figure it out, I hoped to save others the time and trouble.

OK, I'm running on Win 10 Pro on 2 machines, neither one will install, and neither one shows any sign of having ClickOnce installed. Should I download and install it from Microsoft? Never needed it before.

Hi @@TomTiddler. You don't need to install anything related to ClickOnce. Please see our release announcement for instructions on how to install this update. Thanks !

Did this on both machines long before posting :-) BTW "release announcement" suggestions did nothing, still won't install. I've finally given up, downloaded the portable binaries and copied in place. Now I'm running portable versions, but it still doesn't address the issue. Why won't the standard updates decode the zips? Why is "release" software not even installing. Only slightly sorry for being bitchy :-), but I've got  mega grief here from the family. Sigh.

Apologies for the disruption. It is a one-time problem that is specific to the 3.2.36 version. Glad you were able to update manually. Thanks.

Tom, if you have .NET Framework 2.0 or later, you have ClickOnce.

PBzeer, probably, but none of those keys exist under Security in my registry. I'm reluctant to add them all manually. Also, I managed to upgrade using the portable binaries, although god knows what it's done to my databases. Sigh.

I never noticed that I had this problem as well, but my problem is slightly different......

I run the server service and even though it said it hadn't started the service, it did start the emby server but just not the service. I could not get the server to shut down unless I rebooted the PC, trying to start the service manually failed and trying to stop it manually of course gave me the message saying it hadn't been started....

I tried the above fix which then allowed me to do the automated upgrade to 3.2.70 (had already upgraded manually) but this didn't fix my problem mentioned above....

I rolled back to 3.2.60...problem was still there...

I then rolled back to 3.2.50 and the problem is no longer there, the server service now starts and stops as it should...

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
