H/W Transcoding Models?

Recommended Posts

I did a quick search, but wasn't sure what I was actually reading :/. Which if any of the Synology NAS have H/W transcoding support? My NAS is struggling to trans code 4k rips. I currently have a RS3412xs.

I had to look up your server specs since you didn't post them.

If my Googling is correct, your server has a c. 2012 dual-core i3 locked at 3.1GHz with a max upgrade of 8GB RAM. Without knowing the exact CPU, I'd take a wild guess that you'd be lucky to get even a single 1080p transcode.

You will want a Passmark score of about 2000 per EACH 1080p and 4000 for EACH 4K transcode.

It's not true if we talk about H/W transcode ... for example my DS916+ can barely transcode 1080p via software, but takes like 10% CPU when using VAAPI.

In my opinion you can use the specs from synology.com. If they say a model can do 2x 4k transcode you can use that capability with Emby through VAAPI.

The only NAS they sell that specifically call out 4k transcodeing are smaller 4-2 bay devices. I'm assuming the RS1817xs+ would be powerful enough... but i'm guessing it doesn't offer h/w transcoding
