Grey Screen on Playback

Been using Emby for quite some time, never had issues. Lately I'm getting a grey screen when I hit play on specific files. I've been unable to track down a pattern to which files but pulled a log. This is happening on my nexus players on local network. I can play the same files fine through my phone or on the computer. Remote playback on computer works fine as well. I've bolded where I believe the errors first occur. I hit play, the spinny/thinky/circle comes up momentarily, info panel comes up on bottom, then to a black/grey screen and I need to hard restart the Emby App to unlock it.

Hi.  Those server entries are most likely unrelated to your issue.

 

What version of the app are you using?

 

Can you try the beta version to see if it still happens?

I'm not sure which version of the AndroidTV app I'm using, how would I check? How do I install the beta version? This issue is new in the last few days.

I will check version and then try the beta. If I still have issue I will pull the entire log file. What is the best way to truncate the log so extra junk isn't in there?

@@guymyer, are you sure you were using the android tv app during the time of this log? i don't actually see any connections from the nexus player.

The left side shows the version and name of the server.  That's what that is.

 

Over on the right, there is another version number.  What does it say?

Ah, I see that now. 1.5.17.g is app version. If this isn't beta version, how do I force the upgrade... I've already jumped into the beta on the link above.

That is the beta.  What I think we're going to need you to do is produce the problem and then, immediately go to the device settings and force-close the app (as it will be hung in a crashed state).  Then, immediately re-open the app and use the option to send a log to the developer (you will need to have turned on debug options before producing the problem).

 

Then come back here and tell me exactly what time you sent the log.

Thanks very much.  VLC is crashing hard at a low level.  I've seen this with a test video on my NP as well and fear it may be some sort of incompatibility with Oreo in VLC.

 

So, let's look at the item you are playing and try to figure out what it is about it that makes us want to use VLC and see if we can adjust that.

Ah - an avi file.  Can you convert it to mkv?

I could try, but I've watched this file before. About a year ago I did. I have a lot of other Avi files play fine as well. I can still watch this file in browser, on my Android phone, I only have issues with Android TV.

As I said above.  I believe this may be an issue with VLC that was introduced by the brand new OS your NP is running now (8.0).  That was probably just updated in the last week or so.

Ah... So your suggestion is that it's a VLC issue. I thought Emby was its own player. To resolve this I should try moving away from AVI files, convert to MKV?

The app has a couple of different embedded playback engines in it and we try to pick the best one for the content/situation.  In this case, that is VLC except for the fact that the new Android version appears to have introduced some problems there.

 

I will have to adjust the app to try to avoid the situation but, in the mean time (and to get better overall features and performance) you might consider converting some of these so they can use the normal playback engine.
