Samsung Smart TV network problems

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was happy, but only so briefly.

The TV: 2012 E-Series.

I installed following the instructions here:  "Samsung Smart TV (2011 - 2014) Third Party App - Install Instructions."

I then changed to my local network. And played a video, oh the joy.

That was short-lived.

Now I get "Network is not connected. Check the network settings to use Internet Services."

I have turned of the TV and back on, same problem.

I have check the network settings; yes, the TV does grab a valid ip from the same router the server is connected to.

Lastly, since the ever so nice Luke might read this; any chance the official app for this series will be released.

Many thanks.

As far as the official app goes, the Samsung dev portal is only accepting submissions for 2013 and up so there's nothing I can do.

Please consider voicing your feedback to accept submissions for 2012 again. Thanks.

That's looks like the error message from your TV when it's not connected to the internet and you try to start the app, not an error from the app itself.  You need Internet connection to use the app, not just a connection to your router and Emby server.  Don't ask me why, that's just how it is.

Please tell me, Luke, where I can make feedback, and I will ensure I do this every day until it's there. Please. I will call, write, call again and again. Just tell me where and how to do this, I will do it. It's just absurd that they will not accept submissions for 2012.

This is very, very unfortunate. I do think it's wrong for manufacturers or anyone to write programs that deny people their freedom to choose. I should not have to use my personal property on the internet if I don't want to. Have your IoT, great. And if I want my things not to be on the internet, I should have that too. I want to think this is not a programming decision by emby tv app developers, because if it its, then I'd have to drop emby. Please let me know.

Is that community here or elsewhere. Do you have a link? Thanks a lot.

Also, how do I make my case; in other words, what do you need, what do you need access to, what do you need from them to get your projects done, to get the 2012 boxes in your dev. line up? Details, please. is this their forum; https://www.samsung.com/us/support/

It won't make any difference what you say if your TV can't access the internet.

That's your first stumbling block.

That's your first stumbling block.

It simply is astonishing to me how people seem so willing to give up so much of their privacy on the one hand, and on the other would complain about intrusion of privacy. So I recall when it was revealed that Samsung's, it may have been, TV were capturing information and sending it back to their HQ, people were all up in arms and complaining about intrusion of privacy. Similarly, Lenovo's laptop did similar. As well there was an outcry. But I do not hear the same people asking, as I'm asking; why must my TV be on the internet for me to use features, such as networking, that I paid for? Perhaps it's that people aught not be told what's been collected on them, and they're OK? But it's not clear yet, from mods here, whether this limitation is a programming decision on emby independent of Samsung, or one that is forced on them by Samsung as Apple forces developers into certain aspect of their eco-system. Yet another, OK, I'd just drop that. So, perhaps someone can clearly state whether it's a decision here at emby independent of Samsung, or it's forced on them by Samsung. I'd appreciate that very much.

Samsung. Without an internet connection you can't even get to the point of running an app.

According to the developers of that app it is a Samsung thing and not something they could control.  As mentioned earlier it's a Samsung error, and not an app error.  It comes up before the app even starts so they have no control of that.  I've got several apps on my Blu-ray player which do the same if there is no internet

If you look hard you should find several posts discussing this topic in which the old developers answered this question before.  Unfortunately, the app you are using is no longer in development and the developers only pop in once in awhile when things break so best I can say if you need more information then you will have to search for posts by chessdragon136 (the original developer) and cmcg (who took over for a period) who have both answered this in the past.

What a shame. That's it then, I'm now officially on the hunt for a TV without this invasion of privacy. So, I call on you Luke, what are your experiences with TVs, which would you suggest that 1. does not offend this way 2. you have good cooperation 3. has an emby TV app that does not require internet connection. Meanwhile, in my small way every family member and friend will be discouraged starting this Christmas from buying Samsung products. But it won't stop there. Imagine someone telling you that you can't use a feature on your mobile phone or computer unless it's connected to the Internet. What obscenity? It cannot be the default that TVs must be connected to the Internet to be able to use basic hardware features, such as networking. This reminds me, of an idea a while back to setup a website that reviews consumer products based on whether they intrude on personal privacy or not...something along the lines of Open Source, but for hardware. If anyone knows of such, do let me know, so I don't bother. Thanks Luke. I look forward to your response, as always, very polite and informative.

Thanks a lot. I will search for these group members and those threads, just to read for fun. But I'm now going to sell the TV and buy another, based on Luke's suggestion. It's news to be as well that that app is no longer developed. Many thanks. I am very pleased to know that it's not an emby decision, but that of Samsung. I'd have hate to have a chat with Luke about what I conceive as blatant abuse of engineering power, by developing an app that is so intrusive. If we're ever serious about personal privacy, then we strive to produce apps, software, hardware that can function without unnecessarily providing opportunities for infringing on personal privacy. It seems that should be a moral guide. But hey, who am I? I think I'd left Plex for something similar. Can't now recall. I hope here at emby the principle is factored into developing apps, the server, etc. I've said and will repeat, and do apologize; it's good that others can have their Internet of Things, and it's also good that others should be able to not put their things on the internet if they don't want to. Where's the outcry here? And I'm certain I'm not crazy.

@morpheus1, any device/TV that is connected to the internet will no doubt act in the same way.

Out of interest, do you have the "Enable Anonymous Usage Reporting" enabled in the Emby server dashboard ??

Do you run Windows 10 ??

You may want to get a set top box like Roku and run emby from that.

Thanks a lot. I will find one. I do have one, WD Live Plus, but I don't suppose you support that. Do you? Which Roku would you suggest. As well, does the Roku have to be connected to the Internet to use it as a client to access an emby server? Back to square one; or are we moving forward with that option...? Many thanks, Luke!

Only with DLNA but WD TV is getting kind of old now. Roku is a great option.
