Hi,

I just wonder how to sort my media in Emby and to find them the same way I sorted them on all the apps I use (Roku, Emby for Fire TV Stick, Emby for Kodi). That’s one of the main reason I opted for Emby instead of Plex, but it more and more looks like a mess.

Here’s the way I did. I created folders, representing each category. Of course, they were created in a way to balance the contents I have (it’s useless to have a folder with 3 movies, and another one with 252).

Here they are:

- Movies

------ 1 folder by movie genre, according to my needs

- TV Series

------ 1 folder for each series

----------- 1 folder for each season

- Documentaries (including documentaries but also TV shows)

- Kids

------ Movies

------ 1 folder for some animes with plenty of episodes

- Sport (various games and events I recorded and copied to my computer)

Something important to keep in mind, is that I want to have my own movie categories. Let’s use an example: a Western fan would like to have a Western category, apart from everything else. I’m not a Western fan, thus if I have one or two of them, I’ll include them in Action. I’m a comedy fan, and to avoid having dozens of comedies in the same folder, I made different ones (French comedies, Oldies, Classical, Other Comedy).

In the older Roku App, I could browse by folder, and finding a movie was easy, as I only needed to go to the folder I stored it in. It’s still possible in the new one, but the user interface isn’t as friendly as in the rest of the app.

In the Kodi and Fire TV apps, it’s not possible at all. All the files are sorted in categories chosen by the Emby database. And it’s a mess, I have some movie at 5 different places, some other ones are impossible to find (home made movies, for example), some things are mixed (anime episodes are in “random movies” in Kodi), etc.

How can I force the Emby database to respect the categories I want to assign to each video?

Thank you!

Hi, what you can do is go into the emby server dashboard -> library setup -> display tab -> check the box to display a folders view. then you should have a new top level section in Roku and Fire TV called Folders that you can browse.

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

The box is already checked. Here are the results :

1/ Older Roku app (a few months ago)

The top level section was there, the browsing was perfect and the user interface was the same for the browsing by folders than everywhere else in the app.

2/ Current Roku app

The top level folders section has disappeared. Yet, at the very end of the top level section (called library), I can click on "folders")

When I am in the folders, the user interface is very basic : small movie posters with the year, no description.

3/ Fire TV

Also a top level section called library, with “folders” at the very end

There, I only can browse in the first level folders. When I click on one of them (movie for example), I have all the files from all the subfolders (= all the movies, instead of letting me pick the category)

4/ Kodi

No browsing by folder possible

Everything is mixed up. For example, anime episodes are in "movies".

Impossible to find my own categories.

There's a genre list in the movies tab, but the predefined ones instead of my owns

If I can help any way to solve that on the 3 apps, don't hesitate to ask!

Thank you
