roberthleeii 61 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I am planning my home media setup and was wondering how many video streams I could support from my server. I plan on buying several rokus and one pc for the clients. If it maters I plan on hard wiring the roku in the living room and the pc in the game room. 1
Tikuf 663 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 How long is a piece of string. It will depend on your cpu/ format of your media/ network among other things
roberthleeii 61 Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 I plan on building a new pc to run the server on. Something with an i7, 16gb ram, etc., most of my media is mp4 h.264 aac most is DVD quality but slowly getting more HD
Tikuf 663 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Ok Check out http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php This is going to change with some server mods that will be made soon to transcoding but as it stands right now. Each 1080p full transcode stream will require about 2000 points in the "passmark cpu mark" col. As i said this will drop considerably over the next few server releases.

dannieboiz 13 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I have a Core i7 2600, 12gb ram, SSD and I can stream to 4 device using MPC without feeling a dent. However, if you're streaming to web client and such where it has to transcode, I can still stream to 4 device but CPU spike way up there.

ebr 16173 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 If you meant MBC, it doesn't go through the server at all so it won't add to your requirements for playback.
dannieboiz 13 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Thanks for the reply. Are your 4 streams over wire or WiFi? I stream mainly over wired (GbE). But as EBR said, if you're using MBC it doesn't matter the specs of your server as much as if you were to stream over the web or a client. I don't have a Roku so I can't say. But I'm guessing that it's similar to the Android client so it's going to need transcoding. If you have only a couple devices, your specs should be ok even over wifi .
roberthleeii 61 Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 it sounds like I will be good, my plan is to have a wired htpc (game/media room), a wired roku 3 (living room), and then no more than 2-3 rokus, tablets, or phones accessing the server wirelessly.
