Synology and AppleTV4 ..... endless startup

Recommended Posts

I've been using EMBY successfully on a Windows server for the last year, players being Theatre for Windows, Apple TV4, and HTML.

Recently I added a Synology NAS as a backup to my network. Running EMBY from there worked perfectly on all players, until recently.

For the last 2 weeks the Apple TV4's just wont connect to the Synology. I installed latest versions on the Synology and Apple TV.

Latest DSM on a 1513 and a 216, (Both Worked perfectly before), latest tvOS for AppleTV.

All players still work fine on Windows server, its just the Synology and Apple TV combination the doesn't work. (Endless Start-up circle)

What am I missing ??

Hi, where does it have an endless circle? What screen does this happen on ? Thanks.

Hi

Apologies, that shouldve been my opening line.

When I start the EMBY app on the Apple TV, it says 'Starting up' with a sircle underneath it.... It never gets past that screen.

When I connect the same Apple TV to my Windows EMBY server, it respondes perfectly and goes in within 5 or so seconds.

When I connect to EMBY on the Synology from the Windows Theater app, it works perfeclty.

The Apple TV and Synology combination worked fine before.

Hope it helps.

Thanks

How do you "connect the same Apple TV to your Windows Emby Server"?

Exactly what steps produce each result?  Thanks.

It seems like we're getting off topic here.

I only mentioned that the fully updated (tvOS and EMBY) AppleTV works on a non Synology EMBY Server setup and that non Apple TV players will connect to the fully updated (DSM and EMBY) Synology EMBY NAS Server as reference to avoid the non productive unnecessary questions.

The problem: Running EMBY Server on a Synology NAS, using an AppleTV4 running EMBY app to play the meembdia.

Start the app and it tries to connect to EMBY on the Synology, what I see on the TV is a white screen with the words 'Starting up' and a continuous running circle underneath it.... It stays like that for hours and never bring up the next screen where you can actually choose the user.

I trust I've been very direct and clear now.

The steps followed on Apple TV4: Click on EMBY app.....

I tried the same combination on 5 different sites, all with different networks, but the constant being the Synology EMBY NAS Server and EMBY on AppleTV4. It all worked perfectly up until about a week ago.

Anybody with a Synology EMBY Server and an AppleTV4 get the same result ?

We aren't off topic.  We need to know specifics to be able to diagnose what is going on.

You said it works when connecting to a Windows server but not a Synology one.  My question is exactly how are you determining that because if all you do is click on the Emby icon and nothing happens then there is no option for you to select different servers.  Are you physically moving this device to different networks?  Bringing up one server at a time?  Etc.

Also, when it works, are you selecting a server and then a user or is the device configured to log in to a specific user?

Is this the same device (if configured to log in to a specific user on the Windows server) being used on the two different servers?

These types of specifics help us narrow down where the problem may be.

Thanks.

All the questions have been answered above.

This Synology and AppleTV problem is happening on 5 different networks, as stated above.

4 of them only have a Synology server and Apple TV4's, so there's no switching anything, only option is the endless startup screen.

On my network, I use a windows server and different players, AppleTV being one of them. Everything works fine.

I setup a new Synology server on my network to try and replicate the problem, and yes, when I  switch to that server in EMBY from the Apple TV I get the endless startup.

Connecting from a windows based player, I can log into the Synology server with no problem, and watch media.

All of this I stated above, but it seems like it wasn't important to try and bypass all this duplicate questions on what has been stated before.

Apologies on trying to speed up the process.

Ebr, As stated above: the problem exists on 5 different unrelated networks. The constant being EMBY on Synology and AppleTV4.

Me trying to pinpoint the problem area with testing different server platforms and players shouldn't distract from the focus, just add some info to aid the situation. Can we focus on Synology and AppleTV4 in this discussion please ?

Again, Does anybody have the means to replicate the setup in their own environment ? .....and come up with the same result ?

Thank you

Side Note:

In the meantime I've installed Plex on these Synology units and the AppleTVs, using the exact same hardware and networks. Plex works fine in these situations.

I hope it helps.

Thank you

Again, I am trying to get very specific steps so we know where to look.  For instance you said:

when I  switch to that server in EMBY from the Apple TV I get the endless startup.

How, exaclty - step by step, are you "switching to that server"?  Because, if you selected that server from a server selection screen there could be no hang at "Starting Up..." because that would have already occurred.  The message on the screen would have to be something different at that point.  Or, perhaps, it works the first time, but then hangs on subsequent start ups...?

That is the kind of detail we need in order to know exactly where to look since we cannot get logs from the Apple TV app.

Alternatively, if one of these problem servers is setup for external access, if you could create an account for me and PM me the server address and account details, I could try and reproduce the problem under the debugger.

Thanks.

FYI, as requested, I run my personal system with Apple TV4 devices, no problem; so this isn’t an out-of-box broken issue, but something specific to your environment.

It’s also part of our test environment for developing the Synology/XPEnology package, so it gets a fair amount of mileage.

Does it happen if the Synology system is the first thing you try and connect to after freshly installing the Emby app on your Apple TV4?

Best
