Change how single file multiple episodes are displayed

Hi,

I have a series with multiple episodes per file. File names are as per the documentation seriesname S01E01S01E02 etc. Emby picks them up and even finds subtitles but in the library browser only one episode shows up.

Example

S01E01

S01E03

S01E05

S01E07

etc.

Every time there is no entry for the second episode. I understand Emby probably can't start playback halfway through a file but I think it should show the second episode to avoid making it look like there is a lot of missing content.

That's just the way we've always done it. It's possible to consider adjusting in the future.

Hi,

Right now if you have a single file that contains multiple episodes only the first episode will be shown and the other(s) will not be there. When browsing your media this makes it look like episodes are missing.

Example.

serie_nameS01E01E02, S01E03E04, S01E05E06 will result in episode 2, 4 and 6 missing from the library without any hint of multiple episodes per file.

I suggest either of the following

1) change the episode title to something like 1. episode title / 2. episode title. E01E02: title or something similar.

OR

2) Add seperate entries for every episode just as you would with single episode files. The downside of this would be that in in case of episode two you'd still start watching from episode one and if you watch episode one completely episode two will also show up as watched. This might confuse some people.

I think 1) would be the most practical.

Hi,

It should already be doing suggestion 1 of yours

This is how mine looks (this is a 4 episode file, but similar for 2 episode ones)

Try this format for more than one episode per file, its what Filebot does automatically and I have not had any issues:

Example:

Zoo - 2x12 & 2x13 - Pangaea & Clementine.mkv

I use the format 'RWBY S01E02-03 The Shining Beacon.mkv' which also displays correctly.

I believe that while this solution kind of works, I don't think that Emby counts that file as multiple episodes. That is, if you have a series that has 60 episodes but 4 of them are double episodes, it will say you have 58 episodes from that series instead of saying you have all 60. Also, it seems like Emby isn't correctly updating episode information for multi-episode files in all cases. I just went to check for this issue, and this is what I saw:

I had a episode 6 and 7 of 30 Rock season 6 as a single file named with s06e06e07. This episode was displayed in my library as episode 6 only, and the season 6 item showed 21 child episodes. There are in fact 22 episodes in season 6 and I have all 22 episodes in 21 files. I refreshed the metadata on that episode 6 and it updated in the emby UI to show 6-7 as shown in the post by @@paulsalter. Problem is, the season item still shows 21 child episodes even though Emby correctly interprets all 22 episodes.

Perhaps the more concerning issue here is that these multi-episode files aren't always being picked up correctly or updated correctly by the normal library scan. I haven't touched these episodes in years, but they didn't display correctly until I did a manual metadata refresh. Does that make sense? Shouldn't Emby be updating any relevant metadata like that when performing the library scan? If not, I imagine that this feature to label multi-episodes in the UI is newer and I have to perform a top level manual metadata refresh on all TV libraries? Please guide me with the correct course of action for this, thanks!

Reworking multi-episode files is a possibility for the future, thanks.

I know in the past i have had similar issues with doubles not being picked up, but i re scanned my whole library about a year ago, so this looks like something that has been fixed at some point

I notice the same with number of episodes, it counts files instead of actual episodes, but i have got used to this and quite like this way as i always watch doubles as though they are a single episode

eg, i have 10 unwatched episodes of a season, 1 of these is a double, so Emby shows i have 9 unwatched, this i dont mind as i know i have 9 items left to watch, though it woudnt bother me if it did tell me i have 10 left

The way they are displayed (not sure why some of your are wrong) is about perfect for me, where if you have a double, this item only shows once in the library with a double description, i wouldnt like it to be displayed as individual items, both pointing at the same file

Renaming the files as suggested by @@Deathsquirrel works.

I think I simply misread the documentation. For some reason I was sure I read something like S01E01S01E02 was supported but on reading it again I can't find it anymore so I must have mixed things up.
