BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I am using MB Server Version 3.0.5171.19958 on my new WHS 2011 build. My machine is a Dell T20 server with 8GB of RAM and Pentium G3220 CPU. I am having an issue where once a client connects to MB Server the CPU usage spikes and stays there. I am using MB Classic for all my clients. The usage doesn't go any higher when streaming any content. The usage is normal when streaming recorded TV from the server not using MB. The CPU usage does not go back down until the machine is rebooted. Even if I kill the MB Service the usage stays high. Has anyone had this issue or heard of it? Help is appreciated.
Luke 42078 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 do you always have the server on or do you just start it up when needed?
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 do you always have the server on or do you just start it up when needed? Usually I have it set to run when I need it. But since this is a new server and setup I have it running at all times.
Luke 42078 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 ok, well the direction i was headed in was you probably want to check the dashboard to see what the server is doing, if anything.
ebr 16174 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 What process is actually using the CPU when this happens?
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 What process is actually using the CPU when this happens? I am having trouble finding the exact process. Do you recommend any utilities that could help?
ebr 16174 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Just bring up the Windows Task manager and sort it by CPU usage.
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 ok, well the direction i was headed in was you probably want to check the dashboard to see what the server is doing, if anything. I did look at that and it was idle. I let it run all night and CPU was still pegged this morning when I woke up. I was using Mediabrowser Classic just before going to sleep. I shutdown the client machine and when I got up the cpu was running at its full speed and at about 80% - 90% usage.
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Just bring up the Windows Task manager and sort it by CPU usage. I have looked at that and the process with the highest CPU usage is "System Idle Process". This is consistently the highest even if I do not access Mediabrowser.
ebr 16174 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Can you take a screengrab of Task manager when this is happening? Also, be sure and check "Show processes from all users".
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Can you take a screengrab of Task manager when this is happening? Also, be sure and check "Show processes from all users". OK here are the screen caps. The first 2 are before I connect Mediabrowser classic. The second 2 are after I disconnect. Also note the CPU frequency in CPU-Z that is running. I also ran Prime95 for about 10 minutes and after stopping it the CPU went back to normal idle.
Scott84Z28 39 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 System Idle Process should of course be the highest if your machine is doing nothing. Because it's idle. It's not actually doing anything. That's just telling you how much of your CPU is idle. I don't see any major problem here. Nothing is pegged out. Ya, there is some activity, but nothing crazy. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.....
gcoupe 63 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Er, what's that System usage of 43% in the second Task Manager screenshot? That looks a bit odd to me...

ebr 16174 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 None of your screen caps show our process even in the picture and they are all at idle CPU basically - except the one where your actual OS is doing something.
Beardyname 198 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 *edit* ebr beat me to it. I actually don't see anything odd/wrong or anything that seems related to mb3.
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Yea I noticed that also. The weird thing is this happens only after I access mediabrowser server and then close it. The cpu never goes back to idle. 1
pd veeps 2 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Ffmpeg is usually the only process with high cpu usage when mb3 is transcoding. System idle process is showing how much the cpu is idle and that's normal. I think what you are talking about is the NT Kernel & System Process CPU Usage. This might be caused by a bad driver on your system. Google Fix NT Kernel & System Process CPU Usage in Windows 7. 1
BIGGRIMTIM 1 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Problem Solved. I did a clean install of WHS 2011 and fresh divers and it is fine now. Thanks for the help.
