jsandlin 0 Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 I have Emby Premiere setup with a HDHomerun Extend and live TV and DVR function are working great. My question is if I add a HDHomerun prime will I be able to use the 2 OTA tuners along with the Extend to have 4 tuners available? Will I also be able to use the cable tuner with a cable card? Will I be able to watch and record cable channels? Thanks for any information.
maegibbons 1287 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Yes you will be able to use 4 Tuners. You will be able to view/record unencrypted channels using the cable card. Krs Mark

The maybe comes into play with whatever CATV company you are using - For me I have no DRM issues to deal with. The CableCard channels are encrypted but the are no DRM applied. So I can watch/record all the CableCard channels without any issues. If you have one of the large conglomerate CATV companies providing your signal you will most likely encounter issues with DRM. It varies widely from company to company, and even locale to locale. I would contact the CATV you are using and ask for a breakdown of what DRM is applied to each channel - they will know but you may have some issue finding a spokesperson that actually knows what you are asking about. DRM is Digital Rights Management - you can do a search for more info. Various levels of copy protection depending on the channel If you are fortunate enough to have clearQAM channels (un-encrypted digital cable) you can also use the Prime tuner without a CableCard. Hope that helps.
jsandlin 0 Posted November 5, 2017 Author Posted November 5, 2017 I have spectrum cable formerly TWC. I also have a Ceton InfiniTV card now using it with Windows 7 Media Center . On the Centon information page on most if not all the channels it has Copy Control information "one copy" (0x02). Will I be able to watch and record or is this only available on DRM certified software.

The HDHomeRun DVR software will also work, if not currently (I honestly have lost track of where they are in the development cycle) then in the future for Windows 10 and Android. At some point other software such as Emby may also support DRM. But I don't believe it is in the near future, if at all. If you have any encrypted channels without DRM You can access them via Emby for watching, recording etc.
