Emby Server downsizing media art?

I am using Emby Server 3.2.34.0 on Windows 10 (I know 3.2.35.0 is out, but I am happy to wait for the Automatic Updates to automatically update). So apologies in advance if this has been fixed in the new version.

I am quite particular about the art for my media. I have added posters as Primary art for one new TV show and five seasons of it, and one season of a further (existing) show. All the Primary art is being downsized for some reason. For example, one of the posters was 1500×2222. It was downsized to 400×578.

I added a TV show banner sized 1000×185, it was downsized to 758×140.

Existing art appears to be staying at original size.

Why is this happening, and if this is deliberate behaviour, is there an option to stick with original sizes?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, it does not downsize the original copies of the images but it does downsize for display purposes. Does this answer your question?

Not really, unless I am misunderstanding.

Let me give you an example.

The following is an existing season of an existing show.

I downloaded a poster sized 1944×2880. And the Edit Images page shows 1944×2880:

The following is a newly-downloaded season of a newly-downloaded show.

I downloaded a poster sized 1028×1500. And the Edit Images page shows 400×578:

If it was just for display purposes, surely this would apply to all TV shows, both new and existing?

EDIT: Just to confirm, I have been updated to 3.2.35.0, and the behaviour is the same.

You must not have downloaded at 1028×1500. Or perhaps the resolution was listed incorrectly in the data coming from the internet provider  - was it moviedb?

This was the file: http://www.impawards.com/tv/posters/star_wars_rebels_ver5_xlg.jpg. I have been adding art to my Emby TV shows/movies for years, but this has happened now with six primary (tv shows/seasons), and one TV show banner. I have tried on multiple occasions in case it was my error, but the same thing keeps happening.

I have not tried with movie posters since this issue started, so I'm not sure if movies are similarly affected.

I noticed it from v3.2.34.0, could possibly have started happening in a slightly earlier version though.

The url was actually coming from impawards? Either way I can assure you that we don't resize your original image so if there is an issue within Emby it is only going to be at the point of display.

Yes, that was the actual link.

Could someone else please try adding a large poster to a season of TV show and let me know if the behaviour occurs on your end?

Luke, I understand from what you are saying that this is not intended behaviour. Nevertheless, it is happening. So either this is a bug, or it is only happening to me. So if it is only affecting me, what do I do to stop it happening? Would uninstalling and reinstalling Emby Server be sufficient?

Thanks.

It is definitely not happening, i can promise you that. It is probably just a quirk at the point of display. I would not uninstall reinstall as it won't matter.

I tested that same show and couldn't reproduce the problem. Actually, i couldn't even find that same image. What image provider did it come from?

Well in this case, I added it directly from the link I gave above, using the + button, not the magnifying glass. But the same thing happens when I search using the magnifying glass and add a poster from (for example) fanart.tv.

Just my two cents and not sure it is related, every primary image that is bigger than 680x1000 gets resized back down to 680x1000. Tried one that was on fanart that was 1000x1426 and got resized back down to 680x1000. Not sure if this is related or even the same thing, but this is the only resizing I have seen with the primary image.

Again, we do not resize the original that gets downloaded and saved into your folders. We do resize the image on the fly for display purposes, but that is it.

On checking, that (i.e. resizing to  680×1000) happened to me on the primary image of a new TV show. The primary image for the season is being resized to 400×578.

And a banner for a new TV show from Fanart.tv (the one in the pic here) of size 1000×185 was it was downsized to 758×140.

Sorry, I have just noticed the distinction in resizing between TV show level and season level.

(In fact, the poster I used for the TV show level was 500×773 and upscaled to 680×1000.)

[Thanks to nirvmedia for confirming this has happened to him. I thought I was going crazy!]

Again, we are not downsizing the original images.

I did, I thought it unlikely, but didn't there would be any harm in mentioning it just in case.

Thanks for the suggestion. Anyway it appears that when you update an image file the saved dimensions are not getting updated, so as I said earlier, it is only a display quirk on the edit images popup. It will be resolved for the next release, thanks.

Hi, yes I am not ignoring the fact that this is the case!

I am just confused as to why this is/appears to be happening on my (and seemingly at least one other person's) install of Emby Server.

(I mean, even if the picture is not being resized, why is the size label showing a smaller size?)

Yep, display quirk.  Look at the actual images and compare to what the UI shows.

Would make sense, honestly, I never thought emby was resizing or whatever, I thought it was Fanart doing it. But thank you @@Luke and @@Happy2Play for looking at this.

Yes thanks for checking!

So you have confirmed this is just a display issue in the UI correct?

I know I have reported issues like this before and got a reply something to do with the API.
