Question about my Virgin Media Modem

Hope someone can please help. My PC installed the latest Windows Fall Update last night and even though Emby starts up in my taskbar when Windows restarts each time I can't get my Roku to see that the server is running as it's just constantly cycling trying to find my Emby server.

I've tried re-installing the Emby server and the Roku app but I still have the same problem.

Anyone please have any steps to take to determine what the problem may be and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance guys.

I would suggest checking out our Connection Troubleshooter. Please try the steps listed there and let us know exactly what works and what doesn't. Thanks !

Tried all that before I posted Luke :(

Does anyone know if the fall update removed any core framework redists that Emby relies upon to work?

Emby server starts up fine each time the PC is rebooted but none of the Emby apps are able to find the server so it has to be something that the Fall update has modified in Windows because Emby works fine again if I roll back to the previous Creators build of Windows 10.

Is there anything specific I can test to see why the apps can't see the server please Luke?

Hi Luke, sorry I should have said, frustration was getting the better of me I'm afraid :(

I've uninstalled all my anti-virus software, disabled the hardware firewall on my router, put my external IP address into the DMZ on my router, disabled Windows Defender firewall, UAC is disabled and I can now finally get my Roku to see my Emby server. The only problem I have left is that Emby mobile (via Emby connect) asks me to select my server, I click on connect and it tells me that "we're unable to connect to the selected server right now."

All the ports are open in the firewall (even though it's now turned off!) (Port 8096 and 8920) When I enter my internal LAN IP address into my browser it launches but not when I enter my external IP WAN address.

I've tried testing the ports via my external IP on canyouseeme.org and it just times out.

I can't work out what's blocking the connection if both my software/hardware firewalls are disabled and all AV software has been removed.

Any ideas to help a desperate man who is slowly going crazy here please Luke?

have you checked the port forwarding setup in your router?

As far as I can see Luke the correct port settings are in place. Can you please confirm? 192.168.1.2 being my PC that is running the Emby server etc.

Yes that looks fine to me.

So wait, are you trying to access your external interface from your LAN?  You said you got the Roku working, which I assume is on your LAN, but Android mobile via Emby Connect is not working?  Have you tried Android w/o Connect... just direct connect via  WAN IP?

I've managed to get my Roku working on my LAN now but I can't access my Server from outside my home via WAN.

I've uninstalled my ESET NOD32 Antivirus, disabled the hardware firewall on my router, put my external IP address into the DMZ on the router, disbaled WIndows Defender & the Windows software Firewall and opened up ports 8920 & 8096 on my router.

After doing all this If I then test the port status via webpages such as portchecker.co or canyouseeme.org they all report that those ports are still closed!! I've tried this out on Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer.

I want to be able to access my server when I'm away from home via Emby Mobile on my Windows phone and my Roku streaming stick.

If everything is disabled within Windows and on my Asus router what else can I try guys?

Really appreciate your thoughts and help with this btw.

And this router is on the edge of your LAN, not behind a cable modem/router?

@@Luke - I disabled every known security protocol simply just to test if it would allow my server to see the outside world. It didn't. Having the firewall on or off makes absolutely no difference :(

@@mastrmind11 - my Asus router is connected to my cable modem, the router functionality on the cable modem has always been turned off. I've rebooted the modem and the router many times but it makes no difference. I can't understand why my ports are still saying that they are blocked.

Windows firewall is so deeply integrated into the OS that we've seen it cause connectivity problems when disabled. That's why it is better to keep it on and then configure it accordingly.

Guessing you just made a typo, but you said your PC running the Emby Server was at IP address 192.168.2.1, but the ports you forwarded are to 192.168.1.2.

I'm assuming your router is 192.168.1.1 and your PC is 192.168.1.2, in which case the screenshots you posted of your port forwarding would be correct.

You can check to make sure your ISP isn't doing NAT, but this wouldn't explain why it broke with the Windows Fall Update.

I'd also check if your internet connection is using the Domain, Public or Private profile.  Windows firewall rules for each profile are separate.

I ran the firewall troubleshooter in Windows and it said that more than one device is performing network address translation (NAT)

Anyone please know what this device could be or how to find out?

Found out what the problem was guys, panic finally over :)

Just got off the phone to my ISP after speaking to their tech guys. Virgin Media recently 'updated' the firmware on my modem and that update resets the modem to the factory settings. So my modem has apparently been working in 'router mode' and not the 'modem mode' I had originally set it too.

I thought I'd of noticed the repercussions of this before now but I didn't. It's only the double NAT issue that made me check the settings on the modem and on running the port checker there now listed as open :)

The only problem I have now is that when I try to open the Emby app on an Android phone it asks me when I purchased the app, which was when it first came out (2013 from memory).

Apparently the app needs to be 'Unlocked' ?? Luke is this something you can sort out for me please???

Thanks again guys.
