Tranquil 94 Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 I'm about to buy this MSI GeForce GT 1030 2GH LP graphics card for my homeserver. This card seems to be able to do hardware-encoding h264 and h265 streams. Following questions: 1st. Some of my friends are using Amazon TV which is able to handle h265 content. This would be great to lower the bandwidth needed for streaming. Is it possible to transcode h264 media to h265 right now with Emby? I assume: no. 2nd: NVENC is still in experimental state. Is it worth trying or is it still unusable for you? (For whatever reason it might be) Thanks a lot for your input!
Waldonnis 148 Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Best double-check that the GT-1030 actually has the media block on it. I've seen reports that it does not, so it may be worth considering the 1050 instead if you find similar info. As of now, it doesn't seem possible for Emby to transcode to HEVC for playback, but that can be worked around by manually transcoding your library to HEVC and letting Emby transcode to h.264 when a device doesn't support HEVC. It's time-consuming for sure, and finding settings that produce quality HEVC output (read: so actors don't look like they've been laminated) can be maddening, but a side benefit of doing so may be that you save some storage space once you get it all done. I can't speak for how usable NVENC is since I software transcode everything manually so my files can just direct play on all of my devices, but I've heard good things and others can probably vouch for how well/poorly it works for them. 1
