Emby Theater freezing after playback via external player

I'm running emby theater on a separate windows 10 system to the server.

I'm using mpc-be as an external player with madvr and lav filters.

I'm launching mpc-be with the following command line arguments:

(path)

/play

/close

/fullscreen

I am running latest versions of everything. Latest Windows 10 patches with the creators update.

Video card is Nvidia 1070 with latest drivers.

If I watch a tv show or movie for a minute or two everything works fine.

But if I watch a full movie or tv show after the external player closes and emby theater maximises, emby theater is frozen - totally non-responsive. Sometimes video on the emby-theater screen is corrupted, sometimes it is ok.

This has been going on for several versions of emby-theater now.

I've done a complete uninstall of emby-theater selecting remove all traces and re-installed it a couple of times.

I've been hoping driver updates or new versions of emby-theater or madvr would resolve the problem but has been going on for a while now and all the software involved has now been updated several times.

The emby theater pc is a dedicated machine and does nothing else except play videos and movies via emby.

Would appreciate any ideas or suggestions!

I'm not really sure, that's a tough one. I realize this question is side-stepping the issue, but why not just use the internal player? It's really quite robust now.

I'm using mpc-be for playing 3d isos and mkvs.

I'm not having any luck with this.

I've done a clean install of Windows 10.

Installed mpc-be, madvr, lavfilters and emby theater. Noting else and I still have the same problem.

I don't use external players, but to use external filters like LAV, the windows media foundation needs to be disabled. Have you done that? Or maybe the update has affected the foundation in some way...????

Up until recently I was using MPC-HC as an external player, and often (but not always) ET would hang for a period after exiting MPC-HC. It would always start responding again after between 5 and 15 seconds though.

For me it doesn't come back. Just stops responding. Sometimes display screen of ET is corrupted. Sometimes it looks normal - just doesn't respond.

I was away from home most of June, July, August, I had updates on Windows 10 turned off. When I tried system end of August I had to update ET before it would work with the new server version and since then I've had this problem.

Do I need to do report this as a bug do get this actioned?

Perhaps it is specific to the external player being opened as well as what features are used by that external player?

For example using vlc I cannot reproduce this.

I've tried  Mpc-be and Mpc-hc latest versions and with both these players ET hangs after launching external player. Actual playback is fine.

In desperation I've tried Kodi and its fine for me - no problems. Launches external player, plays fine and returns to kodi without kodi hanging.

But I actually paid for Emby and I'd much prefer to use ET.

I'm running a 4k desktop, 23 Hz and using madvr to upscale content to 4k. Running the external players in full screen exclusive mode or full screen windowed both result in perfect playback, but ET hanging,

As I said above I also did a clean reinstall of windows 10 with latest everything on a pc dedicated to ET. Emby server runs on a different computer.

Video card is Nvidia 1070 with latest drivers. But I've had this problem for several months now and been through many versions of nvidia driver updates, versions of madvr and lav filters.

This setup worked perfectly for many months till a update to emby theater introduced this problem.

Is very frustrating for me. I'm a long time emby user and have 2 premiere licenses.

So you're using refresh rate switching with MadVR or you keep your desktop at 23Hz?

I do use madvr for refresh rate switching. But most of my content is 23 Hz so I run my desktop at 23Hz to avoid the delay with resyncing the display.

I have the same problem with ET freezing whether refresh rate switching occurs or not. I've tried lots of different madvr settings and problem remains unchanged.

However when settting mpc-be to use madvr, but use its internal filters instead of external lav filters ET seems to be OK.

So why not just do that? This looks like a highly specialized situation that requires a certain combination of factors in order for the problem to occur. For example, users who are launching other external players, or external players for games are not reporting this issue. Additionally I have a feeling that even if I were to reproduce it, the problem would most likely exist in the rendering layer which is provided by third party components that we are embedding.

I have a 150" screen and I want the best picture possible!

I feel latest versions of madvr and lav filters give me the best result.

This was working perfectly till recently.

Anyway seems my best option is to change to kodi. Works fine with kodi.

I use mpc to playback 3d isos and 3d mkvs.

Will this work with the internal player?

There has been much discussion on 3D playback. I don't use them, but from what I can gather, MVC movies don't play, correctly.
