DS216j doesn't go to sleep

Thanks Luke, yes as i mentioned i had switched off debug logging all last week - it still wasn't hibernating as expected.  I switched on logging again friday evening to generate some logs for you.

Thanks Milli.  I'll try stopping emby to see if this makes a difference.

Yesterday I stopped the Emby server application as recommended. (thanks Milli)

The server hibernated  perfectly ever since.  That is after 30 minutes of inactivity it went into hibernation when i switched on the network connected TV or receiver, the server didn't wake until i specifically wanted to access files from the server. ie as it should work.

So it's definitely the Emby server app for synology!

any ideas Luke?

I'm not sure. First thing to try would be turning off some features. you could try turning off the Dlna features as a test.

Thanks Luke

I've disabled all DLNA features

I'll leave it for 24 hours and see what happens.

thanks

...an export of your DSM log would also be useful, so can we correlate the disks waking up with any activity from Emby Server.

e.g.

DSM -> Log Center -> Search 'hiber' -> Export -> CSV

Ok, i've managed to do the sendlogs things with Putty - SSH

As to DSM logs, following your instruction  there are only 3 logs, one for when i changed HDD hibernation to 15 min, another when i changed it to 30 and another when i changed USB HDD hibernation to none

(no i don't have a usb HDD connected, just trying options to get hibernation to work

thanks

Hello @@Mifu

Thanks for the logs, I'll take a look now - can you give me a specific time (or times) you were expecting the system to sleep?

Also, on the hibernation logs, can you check DSM -> Control Panel -> Hardware & Power -> HDD Hibernation -> "Enable hibernation logs" is ticked.

Ok so I didn't note down specific times

I stopped emby server at around 2230 last night, and switched it on late this afternoon 1800ish ... this morning around 11 i used the server to play music via the network receiver until about 1700 - as expected the server was sleeping until i used the receiver to wake it up to play music.

generally, i expect (and it has in the past) the server to sleep (HDD hibernation) all the time, it would only wake up if i was using it - music or video via tv or receiver .. or during download tasks - and obviously when i'm logged into it.

If the server needs to wake when the TV is on in order to be ready to play video, that's fine by me, but this wasn't the case when i used  DS Video on my old Samsung smart TV

Ok, i've switched on hibernation logs in DSM

I'm leaving the server tonight with emby server running and all DLNA functions disabled, emby server has not got "enable debug logging" ticked .  DSM has "enable hibernation logs" running

I can send more logs tomorrow evening if required

Hello @@Mifu

Thanks for the update. Emby Server will be doing a lot more in the background than DS Video, as it provides a much richer user experience - so this is something to bear in mind.

You can tailor the scheduled jobs if you desire : Emby Server -> Manager Server -> Expert -> Scheduled Tasks.

For example, looking at your logs, I can see the system spent around an hour earlier downloading missing subtitles:-

2017-11-07 19:14:52.802 Info HttpClient: HttpClientManager POST: https://api.opensubtitles.org/xml-rpc
----
2017-11-07 20:16:00.375 Info HttpClient: HttpClientManager POST: https://api.opensubtitles.org/xml-rpc
2017-11-07 20:16:02.831 Info TaskManager: Download missing subtitles Completed after 61 minute(s) and 14 seconds
If you can send the logs again tomorrow, along with the hibernation logs, that should give us a good chance to see what is going on.

Right, make sure to adjust scheduled task schedules to something that makes sense for your server sleep cycle.

Hi

So to begin with I noticed today that Emby serve was still recording logs (2 today at 0:00 and at 1930) even though as i mentioned yesterday, this was disabled.  not sure if this is a bug ?

as a newbie to emby server, i also didn't realise that there was a task scheduler,

but in looking through the emby  log for today, I noticed that it was waking to perform scheduled tasks (corresponding to the times in the DSM logs for waking HDD from hibernation)

I've now amended the schedule to do everything once a week - sure this may not be optimal in regards to what emby can do, but as i've mentioned before i don't use the server  much, nor do i update media often so triggering these tasks weekly, or in some instances on application startup should work for my purposes.

I'll see how it goes for the next 24 hours, hopefully this will solve the hibernation issues

As to subtitles, i see that it has downloaded subtitles for most of my media, but some episodes are missing, possibly because it can't find a match on opensubtitles, or because it can't download them (restrictions from opensubtitles?)    but it looks like emby server keeps trying to get those subtitles (my assumption) , perhaps after X attempts emby should just give up on that media file and flag it, and let the user know?

in regards to the scheduled tasks, perhaps it would be good to give users these options when they first start emby, that way they can keep your recommended settings, or select there own to match their usage requirements? but importantly the user would know that these setting exist.

apologies if i'm just a bit slow and this is quite common knowledge, but i did come from using DS Video... which was quite basic compared to Emby.

Hopefully with amended schedules HDD hibernation works as i would like.

@@Mifu emby server always records log files. Why do you think you can disable this?

Posted

Luke, it may seem obvious to you, but when i don't enable debug logging, i assume it means it doesn't record log files. i didn't know that there is a difference between debug logs and normal logs

Posted

Correct. There is always a log. Debug just means there will be more information in the log file.

Hello @@Mifu

Just checking in to see how you're getting on.

Did you manage to get the system configured to hibernate as you'd like?

Heya

Thanks James, i'm still fine tuning the settings but yep the server is hibernating pretty much how I want it to.
