Emby "Crashing" regularly - Logs attached

I'm getting reports from multiple users that every few days (probably during times of heavier use) that my server is going down and is thus not reachable by remote clients.  My sister uses Emby everyday so when it's down, I get an immediate text :).  When I've gotten these reports, I haven't been using the server myself but will then try to access my server and either it's unaccessible, extremely sluggish, or just no media will playback.  I'm forced to manually restart Emby and that appears to mitigate the issues.  I'm not familiar enough with the logs to know what to look for that may be causing my issues.

Attached is my yesterday logs (split in two based on size).  Most playback on my server happens from 8PM EST on.  Let me know if there is anything else I can do in the future to help isolate the issue when I become aware of it.  I'm usually not at a computer when this happens so I'm just SSHing into my server from my phone to restart Emby to get it online.

Hi, sorry to hear about that. What distro are you on?

If it happens again can you make note of your memory usage?

Official Emby docker container.

Sounds like a memory issue to me.  What are your server specs?

Sounds like a memory issue to me.  What are your server specs?

  • Xeon D-1541 (8-core/16-threads)
  • 16GB RAM
  • SSDs in RAID10

This is the same server I used for Plex and regularly had 8-12 users on it per night.  So unless Emby is much more resource intense, I don't know why my memory would be an issue.  There are no other major services running on this server other than Emby.

I figured as much, and I wasn't implying that it was a memory issue, just that the symptoms match those of a box running out of memory.

A small group of users are experiencing high memory usage. There hasn't been any direct correlation to why it affects those users but the latest .Net Core builds seemed to have improved things. Just trying to identify if you are one of those users.

I'm running 3.2.33.0. I will note the memory usage next crash.

How much memory usage should there be if there are no uses connected and no scheduled tasks happening?  Because I am seeing a bunch of Emby processes uses memory when my server is basically idle.

It's hard to say, it seems mono has issues with releasing memory.

So on my system Emby could be using 30mb at startup, but after several days could be holding onto gigabytes. I've noticed this with other .net stuff on Mono. I'm relatively confident that when the .net core version gets pushed to stable, the problem will go away.

For now because I'm running Emby in an isolated vm, I can just flush the cache via cron every 24 hours or so:

sync; echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

Yea it definitely appears to be a memory issue.  My server is completely idle right now but look at this:

I have about 1500 Movies, 6000 episode, 1000 albums, live TV, and 6-7 users that connect daily and my memory usage seems to hover around the 2-3GB mark. I am running the .Net Core version of the server.

How do I know if I'm running the .Net Core version?  I'm running whatever version is in the latest 3.2.33.0 that is in the official Emby docker container.

Then you are not - it's still pre release.

Unless you explicitly installed it via this thread:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/50012-emby-server-for-net-core/page-55&do=findComment&comment=498202

You don't have it.

I see.  @@Luke any ETA on when the .Net Core version will be included in the official Emby docker container?

Also, here's my memory usage after a restart of Emby.  Released about 5GB of memory.
