Benefits of Server on Server

Currently I have Emby Server installed on my Unraid Server and ET on my HTPC.  Overall I just find it somewhat slow.  Images are slow to load and I'm not sure if cache thumbnail images for all my movies and music on my server are actually also stored locally.  From what I am experiencing, it doesn't really seem so..

So, if I am only using Emby at home on one HTPC and don't stream to any other devices, wouldn't it make more sense to just install Emby Server and ET on my HTPC and just back up the database files, if possible, onto my server just in case the worst happens?

Is it possible to move the database from my Unraid Server to my HTPC if I install Server on my HTPC? Are there any issues with having both on one pc?

It could be a little faster on the same machine, yes. Since you are changing both machines and operating systems, i would suggest a fresh start, potentially coupled with the backup plugin to restore user data. But server settings and libraries i would set up fresh.

That's how I run it.  I've got an i7 NUC that doubles as ET box and server.  Of course since I recently dropped a Nvidia Shield in that room I'm getting less use of the NUC as a HTPC.  Still, it worked great in that configuration.

Do I need to install the loopback as indicated in the Emby Theater thread?  It says for win 7 but I have Win 10.

Ok installed Emby Server on my HTPC. There's an option to start the Server on startup under settings.  Do I need to check this in order to use ET?   I'm guessing so but not 100% sure

That's up to you to decide when you want the server to start. just make sure it is started before running Emby Theater.

IT seems I can make it run as a service as well, is that the case?  If so how exactly do I do that?

What do you mean "it seems"? I just want to know where that came from. Thanks.

Maybe I misunderstood, I was referring to this

This will start the tray icon on windows startup. To start the windows service, uncheck this and run the service from the windows control panel. Please note that you cannot run both at the same time, so you will need to exit the tray icon before starting the service.

That text needs to be re-worded based on the new link I gave you above. Thanks.

Is there a benefit in choosing one or the other?

A windows service can run without having a windows user logged in. That's about it. It sounds like in your case you probably won't want to bother with it.

Yup, probably not.  Thanks

Ok so I set it to run on Startup. I rebooted but don't see any Emby Server processes running.  Should I see something minimized or in task manager?

The log from when you enabled the Startup option should possibly show why.

Also check your start menu's startup folder for the presence of the startup shortcut.

Actually figured it out, same problem I had with Collections.  I selected the option but didn't scroll further down to see I had to Save.

All fine now.

Much appreciated!  Definitely having the server on my HTPC sped things up considerably.
