dnanielsen 8 Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Hi, both my Chromecast 1 and 2 gen is lagging to the point that Emby is unwatchable. I have tried rebooting, factory reset, so I don't know what to do to get it stable. I've been reading a bit about some people having the same issues with Chromecast on both Emby and Plex. My content is playing fine on my device (desktop, mobile etc.) and I also tried to play direct on my LG smart TV webOS, which works fine. Side note: Is it possible to make the subtitles smaller in LG webOS? I have it set at normal size, but it gets much bigger on webOS than my device and Chromecast (when it worked). Also, I'm not entirely sure about it but seems like I'm getting more lags at Chromecast with .srt subtitles enabled? Thanks.
Luke 42078 Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Can we please look at an example? Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !
dnanielsen 8 Posted October 9, 2017 Author Posted October 9, 2017 Sorry, but it didn't lag when I tried to play through Chromecast just now in the first two minutes of the episode, but will try again tomorrow with a full episode. Another issue also, subtitles are not showing up in some episodes (neither on webplayer or chromecast, but they work in VLC Player for instance). .srt is loaded in the same folder and showing up in media info under the episode. I will attach logs from a episode I tried to play just now. I'm not sure if that's the correct log? It's from the program files folder where Emby Server is installed. I don't have a Emby folder in AppData/Local. server-63643175547.txt
Luke 42078 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 The subtitle issue is resolved for the next release, thanks.
dnanielsen 8 Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 Thanks, hopefully new release is soon I'll post logs if Chromecast is lagging again.
dnanielsen 8 Posted October 18, 2017 Author Posted October 18, 2017 Hi, I'm running the newest beta and subtitles are now working, thanks. However, there is still some lagging issues through Chromecast. I've attached a new log where it starting lagging at around 19:50. I've tried pausing the content when lagging occurs and resuming playback shortly after, this has helped some times but not always, this time it was lagging very much. server-63643952435.txt
Luke 42078 Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Well it's direct playing so there's not a whole lot we can do. Try reducing the chromecast bitrate setting. If you reduce it far enough that should force to video to transcode. See if that helps. Thanks.
dnanielsen 8 Posted October 18, 2017 Author Posted October 18, 2017 I already have the video quality in playback settings set to - 720P 4 Mbps, do I need to set it even lower? Because I have 30 Mbps down and 90 Mbps upload speed on my connection, so it should be more than good enough?
Luke 42078 Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 It depends on the bitrate of the video. Is it lower than 4 mbps? try lowering the setting to something that is lower than the bitrate of the video.

It is worth doing so to rule out your wifi connection as the cause. https://zipso.net/chromecast-video-quality/

Is it lower than 4 mbps? try lowering the setting to something that is lower than the bitrate of the video. It was 2858 kbps bitrate, so yes. Will try to lower the setting to 2Mpbs and play again tomorrow, thanks. Have you tested with any other apps? Netflix, Youtube, etc? It is worth doing so to rule out your wifi connection as the cause. https://zipso.net/chromecast-video-quality/ Yes, it's working fine with other streaming services at a higher quality than I'm trying to play through Emby, so that shouldn't be the case.
Luke 42078 Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 It could always just be struggling with that particular file due to the encoding of the file, and not due to bandwidth reasons.
dnanielsen 8 Posted October 19, 2017 Author Posted October 19, 2017 Alright, so I played an episode today with the 720P - 2Mbps setting enabled, and it worked with no issues on the Chromecast. I saw in the admin dashboard that it was transcoding this 43 minutes episode file in something like 3 minutes time when it was done at 100%, so my question is: would it be better for me to always transcode and not direct play? Is it possible to force transcoding regardless of video quailty, I tried searching and looking through settings but didn't find any option for that? What can I do to get the highest quality for different files (with different bitrates) through transcoding?

More than likely it was the reduction in bitrate that made it play smoother - not the mere fact that it was transcoding.
thisisvlad 1 Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 I am also having issues with my chromecast. How do I "Try reducing the chromecast bitrate setting"? Is this a setting in my chromecast? Or in emby? Also, how do I know if my video is being transcoded?

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !
