Music Renaming Issue

You want music  as "01- name"

I have 1300 tracks NOT labeled that way.

I have looked at:

Song renumberer

MusicBrainz Picard

Tagscan

Music Bee

Song Renumberer

and others...

ALL fail to support multiple auto renaming. All of them have *terrible* (read rudimentary) file management interfaces, some do not allow typing in a name, some do not change directories ever until you force it, and all insist on going to the root MY PC to start every single folder search! With 1300 files to renumber to fit into your format, I'm frustrated by the clunky software.

Does anyone know a program with an intelligent enough  interface to simply allow me to renumber audio tracks in a folder into their original folder, and then go to the next folder without starting from scratch?

Thanks.

Emby relies far more on tags than file names.  I've never had a problem with my names if my tags are right.  I make sure for video files to use a supported naming format.  I've never even needed to look at the naming wiki for audio.

Actually, we don't. What made you think that? We don't care what the file name is. We get the track number from the audio tags.

Try mp3tag if you haven't already. I know it can do what you are asking.

Actually, you do. That's a direct quote from your webpage on naming audio files.

And you're right, you don't, so you need to edit that part of the manual.

So far I've found it supports:

0001_ FILE

01 FILE

01) FILE

YANKEE013.MP3

FILE_01_BAUM_64kb

It does not support 01FILE, I believe.

My initial problems came from starting with a mixed folder of misc music, many formats, etc. This has been a good learning experience for me, as I know/knew nothing about audio files.

I'd also like to add that I still do not understand the "tag" thing, or anything else about audio files, so all this is on a learning curve for me; thanks!

What page are you referring to? Because it appears to me that our wiki doc does not need any adjustment:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Music%20naming

The recommended folder structure for music is Artist\Album\Song

 \Music
    \Artist Name
       \Album Name
          1- Song.mp3
          2- Song.mp3
This is not a requirement and other structures will also work, but this is the most common method. Some other examples of supported structures are Album\Song:

Also

Any naming convention for audio files is acceptable. Track numbers are retrieved using embedded ID3 tag information.

Thank you for that clarification; from a guy who thinks of a "tag" as something you do to a baseball runner, I only had your text to go by; I missed the "Track numbers are retrieved using embedded ID3 tag information" because it would have meant nothing to me. So I guess I need to learn about TAGS. I will say, that as a tyro, following your instructions on the page, after looking at my files, I was still lost. Learning slowly as I am, I have cleared out the non-conforming files and am cleaning up the others to fit.

So I was quoting the very same passage as you were, only as a tyro, I totally, completely did not take the "Any naming convention for audio files" seriously, when you gave that 01-  example!  Nor did I read down far enough to catch that other 'tag' bit, even though it would have been lost on me. I was not about to just use any format, I read to use THAT one, again ignorant of 'tags.'

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem with multi-cd albums. Both the folder structure and naming conventions is setup via the instructions in music naming.

Prior to changing the structure half my albums weren't being picked up or being labelled incorrectly so I'm slowly fixing this and updating as needed.

In the case of this one here is the view in Emby and as you can see it has the song sequence for both albums going 1 1 2 2 3 3 etc

When you go to the folder view on the server it is like this

When inside the disc it is like this

Do I need to have the file naming convention changed to Disc 1 - 1, Disc 1 - 2, Disc 1 - 3 etc.?

Any advice or help will be appreciated.

Otherwise since changing my folder structure the music is now starting to work correctly.

After this it's the Music videos I'll clean up.

Disc numbers come from embedded tags within the audio files, not the folder name or filename. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Hi Luke,

Is there a way to modify the embedded tags that your aware of?

Also is there an updated Metadata guide, as I have noticed that the 2015 instructions don't seem to match with the latest revisions as I thought maybe I could tweak it there

Regards

What parts about the instructions do you feel don't match? The latest information can be found on our wiki:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Music%20naming

As far as modifying embedded tags, there are lots of free programs out there that can help with this. musicbrainz picard is very popular, as is mp3tag, mediamonkey, etc.

Hi Luke,

Those instructions work perfectly and that's what I have been using to update/modify my folder structure.

Its this page https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Metadata%20manager that is out of date as this does not match nor does it work as described.

The last update for that page is "Daniel Seymour edited this page on Jan 8 2015 · 5 revisions"

I referred to this for the music videos that I have also but it does match current views so even the music page may require an update

As you can see below this is what the Metadata Manager looks like

Any suggestions for the free tag software?

I use Mp3tag for most of my tagging needs, but sometimes with something as simple as adjusting a disc number I just highlight the files, play in Foobar (A music player on my pc) from the context menu, then change the disc number in the properties in there.

Whatever method you use (as Luke mentioned Musicbrainz Picard is also popular with those who want to retag), the view you have above is because you don't have the "Disc Number" set in the embedded music tags. The file structure is fine (there are a number of options which work, including CD 1, etc), but you need to change the embedded tags of the first cd so "Disc Number" is 1, then "Disc Number" is 2 for the second CD, 3 if there is a third disc, and so on. (Album name should obviously be the same if you're looking for one entry in the library for a multiple disc album, as is the case in your example, sometimes the metadata lookup in ripping programs like EAC will populate an album title including "Disc 1" or something similar which would result in a different album entry for each of the discs in your library). Then when you rescan your library Emby will split them into sections for the two discs when displaying.

I had a bunch of minor issues like this when I first added my music library, but I cannot emphasise enough that it is best to get the underlying tags right in your music, rather than manually adjusting them in the Emby interface. Eg: you could go through every track in Emby, changing the Disc Number, but it takes seconds to rather fix the tags in the files with something like Mp3tag which will then update on the next library rescan. And they'll be right going forward, whereas I ended up redoing some of the first files where I had manually edited from within Emby as these edits disappeared after one of the server updates. That was my experience, anyway.

Thanks ryandavidg for the suggestion.

Still won't help with the other metadata for music videos as per the instructions on the Wiki as it appears the metadata section is no longer up to date.

Yeah I guess its gonna be a lot of re-tagging files for me

It is up to date. What do you feel needs updating?

Posted
With regards to the steps, I've followed them and can not find ways to configure/setup the music videos via that method

I have also noticed that when working on other areas (ie. TV Season to configure a group then multiple shows) like Star Wars then other shows it doesn't give me the same screens as in the Wiki.
It seems the metadata manager has been updated however the way to do things doesn't appear to be matching any more.

I am using Emby Server on a Windows 10 Professional Intel i7 laptop
With data stored on a QNAP NAS box
Then accessing the web interface via Edge, Chrome, Firefox etc. and the screen shots to do things does not match for any.

Or am I missing something?
Server version is 3.2.60.0 also

I looked at the screenshots and they still look at relatively accurate to me.

What has changed are some of the styles but the content is mostly the same. Nonetheless we'll update them. Thanks.
