johnnybravo22 0 Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I am new to all this but i would like to get started and recieve Emby onto my TV etc, through my ROKU stick. I used to get plex and emby from a freind for £80 per year, everything on it. But it keeps going off or going down. Can anyone advise me as to how to get started to recieve a good selection of channels from emby to my Roku Stick. I ve looked around on here but non the wiser. Plex seems simpler , via there website, join , get a pin , add to Roku Stick and thats it. Is joining Emby simmilar. Thanks if you can advise
CBers 7450 Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Check out the "Getting Started" wiki page. https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Quick-start You either have to have your own Emby server, or have someone you know and knows you, to invite you to join their Emby server.
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Emby is not a media service you join. Neither is Plex for that matter. Both are tools to organize and playback your own media. What you had was illegal commercial access to someone's pirated media server. We can't help you get that back.
johnnybravo22 0 Posted October 8, 2017 Author Posted October 8, 2017 i dont want that back i want to get my own emby through my roku stick, is it simple to just sign up , get a pin and start watching some good TV, thats what its all about for me. Nothing flash, just access to movies and sports., via my roku stick.
maegibbons 1287 Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Emby can "enable" you to do that. if you are looking for a Turnkey solution, without effort or research in to suitable IPTV providers, then Emby is not for you. Krs Mark
tdiguy 99 Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 One thing of important note here. When it comes to emby there are 2 parts of the set up ( much like plex honestly ) there is the server which aggregates your media weather it be live tv, recorded movies or what have you. Then there are the client devices like a roku stick, a amazon fire tv, emby theater and so on. Plex is set up in a similar manner where there is a server then there are clients that connect to the server. It sounds like you have a roku stick which i believe emby has a channel for ( i think thats what roku calls it right? ) you can verify that easily by looking around on the roku for emby. However you make no mention of having any type of server, which is really the important part, without an emby server a emby client is pretty useless.
Chyron 256 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 (edited) Suffice it to say, with Emby and with Plex, you effectively are watching your own movie files, stored on your own computer (ie. the "server".) The jist of it is, you have a computer where you store ripped or downloaded Movie or TV Show files. Those files are organized in a particular fashion that Emby and/or Plex is comfortable with. Then you have the Emby Server software (or Plex Media Server software) installed and running on that machine. While that computer is on and has said software running, the Emby (or Plex) client app on your Roku Stick (or your phone, or your tablet, or really any computer anywhere) should be able to access those files. The guys here say that Emby isn't a turnkey solution, but really it isn't that difficult to use. It might be somewhat more complicated under the hood than Plex, but not really. The biggest hurdle with either Plex or Emby would be to rip all of your DVDs or Blurays to a computer (that is preferably always on) and make sure the files are named correctly. Generally speaking, if you have your files organized correctly and tell Emby where they are, Emby should have little to no problem finding and organizing them for you akin to Plex. And, if I may say so, there are features Emby has that Plex doesn't---like the ability to have a single Collections entry for a movie series in your Emby Movie Library, so that if you have the whole 007 movie collection it will take up 1 spot instead of 20. Plex doesn't do that. Also the developers here at Emby are friendlier and more responsive should you have any problems. Whereas the development staff at Plex have become rather notorious among Plex's forum users for being unresponsive and such. The major difference between Emby and Netflix (for example) is that if you use a Netflix client you are then watching movie and show files that are stored on Netflix's media servers, not your own.
