KasunBuddika 0 Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I have hp proliant dl380 server with 8GB RAM with gigabit Ethernet card and install Emby media server. Users are connecting through WIFI (100 users) and I just realized if the many users connect simultaneously to the server and the server will not be able to handle all the links and network really will be congest. Therefore, please advice how many concurrent users can be stream movies at the same time and is there any way to limit the users.

You are more than likely going to be limited by your CPU well before your network card limits you unless by some chance 95% of those clients connecting are direct playing and thus don't require transcoding. 1
Dizzy49 99 Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 It will really depend on what the users are doing. As iamspartacus mentioned, some will be transcoding while many will be playing directly. I have two machines, one has a beefy Xeon with 32GB of ram, and another a i7 with 32GB of ram and an additional SSD cache drive for Emby. I can stream 4 transcodes concurrently without issue from either machine. I have pushed it to 6, but if any of them are a 4K source I start to see some issues. As for your network limitations, you'll have to do the math, but I have seen issues over wifi at my parents house where they have a pretty congested wifi setup. You'll have to see if it makes sense to transcode things for easier delivery via wifi, or if direct play makes more sense. It's all about the numbers.
Lotus503 0 Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Rule of thumb for CPU is something like 2k CPU passmark score required for each 1080p transcode. Want 4? have a CPU that scores over 8k. I run Dual Hexacore Xeons with 40GB ram and everything but library on SSDs, I can comfortably handle 5 or 6.
dcook 299 Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Depends on the quality of the media, but you will most likely hit 100% CPU before you max out Memory or Ethernet
