Cropped 1080p media reports as 720p

When I prepare media for my server, I crop the black bars, if any, from the 1080p Blu-ray source. In one example, I cropped the black bars from a 1.33:1 aspect ratio film, leaving a resolution of 1436x1080.

Video

Codec H264
AVC Yes
Profile High
Level 40
Resolution 1436x1080
Aspect ratio 4:3
Anamorphic No
Interlaced No
Framerate 23.9760246
Bitrate 15358 kbps
Bit depth 8 bit
Pixel format yuv420p
Ref frames 1
NAL 4

Emby reports this as 720p, and in quality selection, the highest that can be chosen is 720 - 10mbps.

Hmmm... where do you see "Emby reports this as 720p"?  That width should still equate to 1080.

I swear this has been reported before and I have media that reflects this issue also.

And testing in the web client I can see the limitation also when comparing the 720p and 1080p transcoding options that are avaiable.

Yeah, it's starting to look like anything less than 1920 horizontal, even though it's 1080 vertical, isn't recognized as 1080p.

It is hard to gauge this as 1920X800 is 1080p also.  So a variable has to set.

Yes, that's correct.  Sorry I was calculating incorrectly before.

We key off of the width because most modern items will be 16x9 or wider.

So, this would create anomalies with 4:3 material.

Right. I do have one movie at 1920x660 and it's reporting correctly as 1080p, so a reduction on the vertical side is working ok.

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/blob/master/MediaBrowser.Controller/Entities/Video.cs#L783-L808

            if (videoStream != null)
            {
                if (videoStream.Width.HasValue)
                {
                    if (videoStream.Width.Value >= 3800)
                    {
                        terms.Add("4K");
                    }
                    else if (videoStream.Width.Value >= 1900)
                    {
                        terms.Add("1080P");
                    }
                    else if (videoStream.Width.Value >= 1270)
                    {
                        terms.Add("720P");
                    }
                    else if (videoStream.Width.Value >= 700)
                    {
                        terms.Add("480P");
                    }
                    else
                    {
                        terms.Add("SD");
                    }
                }
            }

Understand now? Perhaps this part of the code should be refactored to make use of videoStream.Height.Value in these evaluations too?

I swear there was a change discussed in a thread where I reported this a looooong time ago to change this to either apply the 1080p label when the width is 1920 or the height is 1080 since those options cover both widescreen and 4X3 content.  I stopped reencoding my disc rips so I hadn't noticed this recently.  Everything is 1920X1080 with bars included since that's how blu-ray stores things.

I just wanted to ask if this will be fixed or at least is scheduled to be. Especially since it was noted in the past but still persists.

It's something we will review for a future update, thanks !

I was just about to create a thread asking about this. I am new (today actually) to Emby and noticed this with 12 Angry Men. It's labeling the movie as being of 480p DVD quality, rather than 720p Blu-ray. In reality, I only have 11 out of 1,338 movies that are 480p or below. However in Emby...it says I have 31.

Thanks, we'll adjust that. It's just at the display level so it's not really causing any problems. thanks.

I am also seeing this issue where 1080p content is showing up on the library page and movie stats page as 720p vs 1080p I have about 70-80 movies that are like this.

It's only at the point of display so it's not really harming anything. We are considering 1900+ width as 1080p, but I will lower it though in order to handle those 1892 examples. The 1440 one though is unlikely to change. thanks.

Seeing that 720p is anything 1280 -> 721 anything over 1300 --> 1920 should be safe as 1080p, I use the stats page to ensure that all my content is updated to at least 1080p so having these show up as 720p is problematic - again this shows up with the stats plugin as well as the web gui

I would say (width):

480p anything equal or less than 720

720p anything between 725 -> 1280

1080p anything between 1285 -> 1920 (14XX would be 4:3 1080p content)

4K anything above 1925 +/-

Thoughts?

Any updates on this? I have about 24-25 720p films showing up as 480p. Thanks!

Now here is the same movie in Plex, showing correctly as 720p:

What version of Emby Server?

Version 3.2.70.0 on MacOS. I had the same problem with the last release as well. Thank you for your help...you're a one man Army!

Then i would try again with the next release because I can see we're already checking for >= 1200 on 720p. Thanks.
