iamneo 3 Posted July 20, 2018 Author Posted July 20, 2018 Of course I have... It does not prompt you for anything, it just plays the 3d video. Which is useless when playing on my phone with the 2 pictures side by side or top and bottom with some other 3d videos. It does show that the movie is 3d before playing it. While the movie is playing, there is no options available to select a 2D image. You can change quality of the stream, subtitles, etc... Is there a setting I am missing? Something I need to install on the server perhaps? Emby is current on the server. The emby app is current on the phone. thanks... Stan...
Luke 42077 Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Ok thanks. I think we just still have work to do there to transcode it to 2D.
iamneo 3 Posted July 21, 2019 Author Posted July 21, 2019 It has been a few years since I started this discussion. I have noticed with Certain 3D movies that they automatically convert to 2D before being displayed. I have not been able to figure out why this only works with certain 3D movies. It will convert to 2D in the windows Edge browser It will render in 3D in the Chrome browser It will convert to 2D in the Windows Emby app This poses an issue as I used the windows emby app on the PC connected to my 3D TV. So if I want to watch 3D on certain 3D movies I have to use a different app. Is there any way to place an option on the server to disable this feature? thanks for all the hard work you do... Stan...

If we can look at some examples then I can provide more detail. thanks.
iamneo 3 Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Hey guys, I just discovered that the 3d to 2d transcoding works seamlessly. I guess the issue I had, was that I assumed that you were using the file labels on the MKV container files to determine whether the movie was 3D or not. example: 3D.HTAB or 3D.HSBS I had discovered that it was going on the video properties(image attached) using the stereoscopy settings within the header of the MKV file. I had discovered this by accident when one of my files played in 2D, when I was sure it was a 3D file. Checking the headers, I had discovered that this one file had the Stereoscopy settings below. a value of 1 is for hsbs, a value of 3 is for htab. If you set this property correctly in your 3D files, it will render in 2D automatically using Microsoft Edge, windows Emby app. Irregardless if they are on the home network or not. Which pretty much was what I was looking for. Thanks for that. However it will still play in the 3D format using chrome, or the android Emby app. Again irregardless if you are on the home network or not. Is there a way to turn off this the 3D to 2D rendering, outside of editing the headers and removing the STEREOSCOPY setting. Thanks again for make EMBY so great... Stan...

Because currently we are not doing a whole lot ourselves for the 3D to 2D conversion. What you're experiencing is probably happening automatically at some level of the process.

iamneo 3 Posted September 5, 2019 Author Posted September 5, 2019 Oh ok... sorry my bad... If the 3d movie has the setting in the header, like I mentioned before. In the windows emby app it will render the video in 2D, rather than the 3D double image. In windows microsoft Edge, it will again automatically render the 3d Video in 2D. Within chrome and IE it will render the video in the normal 3D. If I delete the MKV settings in the header, for example remove the stereoscopy setting, it will then render the video in 3D. It seems to happen automatically, when the stereoscopy settings are set correctly, when played with Edge browser and the windows emby app. thanks... Stan...
Luke 42077 Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Ok, thanks for the info. In the coming months we'll be doing more thorough testing of our 3d to 2d streaming and see what needs adjustment where.
n00b42 41 Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 Sorry to dig this up. I would also be interested in this feature. As for usecase discussion: Most of my movie library is 2D, with a few exceptions were I have a 3D SBS or TAB > Naming should already be appropiate: "Title (2012) [1080p] [3D]\movie.3d.hsbs.mkv" Most of the time I would also want to watch them in 2D as well to not have to have the movie in different versions. E.g. - Home Cinema (FireTV): either watch in 3D or 2D (depending on who and how many people are watching.) - Mobile (Android): Only 2D makes sense for me - PC (Browser/EmbyApp): usually watching in 2D, but with a virtual reality Headset also 3D becomes a viable option.

HI, yes we plan to improve 3D to 2D transcoding in future updates. Thanks for the feedback.
mahuwu 0 Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 Really need this feature to play 3D movies in 2D. It has been 1 1/2 years now, I'm still not able to view 3D in 2D. You only need instruct it play the left side image/video stream. Thanks Mahu
eTomm 6 Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 (edited) This is a feature I would like too. Even a easy 3D button that cycles through 2D->HSBS->HTAB->2D... would be enough. Edited August 12, 2024 by eTomm
Juergen_Marx 0 Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 Hi, any updates to this 1 year later?
Luke 42077 Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 54 minutes ago, Juergen_Marx said: Hi, any updates to this 1 year later? Hi, have you tried with the latest versions?
Juergen_Marx 0 Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 Hi, to the best of my knowledge, I'm running the latest versions of Emby Server and fire tv app. Problem: 3D video content - specified in file meta data or not - ist played like any othe video content. Meaning I see two Video Streams either side by side (SBS) or top and bottom (TAB). Possible Solution 1: Is there any way for Emby to (a) recognize 3D video content according to video meta data and (b) play it in a way that devices with 3D-ability can handle as 3D? Possible Solution 2: Failing that, is there a way for emby to "on the fly" (without prior conversion) reduce 3D video content to a 2D video by playing only one of the streams (left or right / top or bottom)? Any input would be greatly appeciated!
eTomm 6 Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 And I would add that after that emby will be able to recognise if a file is a 3d video based on metadata and/or filename, I would still want to have a button to cycle through the various mode. I have a 3D TV. Sometimes I want to watch 3D movie in 3D sometimes in 2D. Also, I would add a user preference to choose the starting mode for 3d content, if 2d or 3d (then the user would use the button to cycle to the right mode in case) 1 1

Juergen_Marx 0 Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 Hi, don´t know about any 3D naming conventions, sorry. But file metadata are correct, emby recognizes 3D and shows tag accordingly.

My Optoma Beamer can play 3d and I like to watch a 3D movie - that´s why I have hardware (beamer) and software (movie files) in 3D - but sometimes it´s too much of a hassle to equip everybody watching with 3d glasses.
Neminem 1518 Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 I guess this is relevant. 3D Video Naming | Emby Documentation 1
Juergen_Marx 0 Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 34 minutes ago, Neminem said: I guess this is relevant. 3D Video Naming | Emby Documentation Thanks @Neminem! Up to now, my 3D movies were all named "*_3D_*", but addition HTAB/FTAB/HSBS/FSBS was missing. By naming one exemplary 3D movie accordingly, Emby seems to set metadata accordingly. Up to now I had to set metadata manually, so this is more convenient. Unfortunately, both ways don´t seem to change embys playing the movie with two visible (left/right) video tracks. In the case of 3d_HTAB or 3d_FTAB two video tracks are shown one on top and one on the bottom. Should emby change playing mode with naming of metadata? Than this does not work for me.

Hi Luke, in fact, I don't think this matters cause what Neminem pointed out here. 15 hours ago, Neminem said: I guess this is relevant. 3D Video Naming | Emby Documentation Documentation states that metatags are used, but filenames are supported too. I think the problem is in usability. Also, as Juergen_Marx said too, there are sometimes when equipping everyone in the room with 3D glasses is uncomfortable or impossible, but still you would like to watch that movie and restart it in 2D mode. Sometimes, instead, Emby or the user simply failed to give the right metadata, but you would still like to switch to 3D mode. Sometimes 3D is what you want, and you just would like the movie that is correctly identified as 3D would start in 3D. Maybe someone crazy would like to use the virtual 3D function of their TV in 3D movies played as 2D (just kidding... ) A button in the player would be the first part of the implementation of the full feature. The second part would be starting to play in the right mode The third part would be adding a preference in the user settings for how you would like to start playing 3D movies The fourth part would be supporting the HDMI-CEC feature of notifying a 3D content is playing. Maybe I went too far :D
ebr 16169 Posted December 7, 2025 Posted December 7, 2025 Hi. All that makes sense but 3D was pretty quick to die in home media so it is difficult for all of this to move to the top of the priority list right now.
