Seeking of recordings?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi all, I set up Emby on a Win7 machine with ServerWMC. I can watch liveTV and load up the guide.

When watching a recorded or currently recording show, I notice it will not let me seek ahead until it buffers it. If I were to watch an hours-long recording, I wouldn't be able to jump into the middle of it unless the entire video buffers up. Is this normal behavior? Thanks.

Hi @@xilex, are these completed recordings? what emby app are you watching them from?

One was a completed recording, the second was an on-going recording, both done by Windows Media Center.

It's possible that the server is not getting enough media info from the serverwmc plugin to accommodate that. to be honest, for completed recordings i would strongly suggest just setting them up as a regular emby library and playing them that way.

I've been testing out a few setups, just trying to get something working that is dumb-proof enough for my parents. Maybe a limitation of ServerWMC.

The only two solutions that work are Kodi + ServerWMC and old SageTV (which I am trying to replace). I asked on Plex forums about their Live TV setup and they said I would not be able to watch something that is currently recording. Need know it works before committing to Plex Pass.

Do you know if native Emby PVR/DVR is able to seek correctly on both its completed recordings and on an on-going recording.

Also, your trick to add it as a library works, at least for the one video I have in there.

(I don't know if it's just me, but every time I click submit it erases what I've written)

Hi, yes you can watch and seek in-progress recordings. Just be aware there are a couple apps that it hasn't been implemented in yet, like Apple TV for example, and the Emby for Kodi add-on.

Sweet. It just needs to be viewable on a Windows box (which is satisfied by either web or home theater), maybe an iOS device, and looks like if I have Emby open on the HTPC I can fling it there, or to a Chromecast and/or Fire TV.

What is the source of the recording?

Hey @@ebr... I have an HDHomeRun Prime with just the native Emby live TV feature set (no special plug-ins) running on a Windows 10 server.

I tried to watch a recording that was still in progress on Monday using my Shield and when i tired to seek (like to skip commercials) it would re-start the recording from the beginning. I've been able to watch complete recordings with no issue.

I just tested this and it worked fine.

Do you have the conversion feature for recordings turned on?

I just looked and I have the "automatically convert to a streaming friendly format" option checked. Should I uncheck it? If I do, what file format are recordings saved as? Are there any other negative impacts of unchecking this? Thanks again for the help.

It will be saved in .ts format.

Is leaving that option unchecked the recommended configuration? Will that impact my ability to stream as the note below the setting implies?

Yes, leaving it unchecked is default behavior.
