Metadata for Cast

Recommended Posts

So I'm working on adding in a bunch of metadata for my media while I'm setting aside money/buying the parts for my new machine and I'm running across a similar issue I had in the past. When I add certain people in the cast it won't save them, it will add them into the nfo file but will not display them in the web interface. The one I had issues with before seems to have fixed itself but the one I have now I can only get it to save by putting a bunch of spaces in between the names and if I click it, it will immediately erase the name again. After some research I'm thinking it's because of a conflict with information on the Movie database, when searching the name on the site a completely different person pops up so it seems like Emby is refusing to allow me to manually add in the person because it doesn't match what's on the Moviedb. I've tried manually adding in the person.xml and even adding the person to the Moviedb but so far no dice. Is there any way to manually override Emby so it will accept the person even though there is a conflict? Or is there another way to get around this so I can add in the person and it will keep it?

Hi, can you please discuss some specific examples and outline specific scenarios? thanks !

Yep! Show is: Mystery Science Theater 3000 It's listed as Season 1 on IMDB but season 0 on TvDB.

According to IMDB the Director for episodes 1-15,17, and 20-21 was Vince Rodriguez (IMDB ID: nm0735539). He wasn't on TMDB before but I've added him on there manually so that ID is: 1885749. But when you search on TMDB for Vince Rodriguez another result for Vincent Rodriguez III (ID is: 1485094) pops up. I've removed Vincent Rodriguez III from the metadata folders but when I type in Vince Rodriguez into the metadata manager it went save it. I see it went into the nfo file but it won't show at all in the library.

The other one that seems to have fixed itself but still send to have a slight conflict is Alexandra Carr (Same Show) She shows fine now but it keeps trying to attach a TMDB ID and picture that isn't correct. When you search her on TMDB the result Carrie Coon comes up (ID is: 1308445) and before you ask, they are different people they show up as different profiles on IMDB and the Filmography is different.

Did you need any more info?

All metadata has to be exactly the same or a person just disappears in Emby.  So everywhere that reference the person must be identical.  The Series/season/episode or movie nfo and person metadata have to have identical names to include case to show properly.

So some modification to a person can make them disappear.

So, what would be the proper steps to get it to show then? Do I need to add them in TMDB and then add them to the show, then season, them episode? After you saying it's possible it's mismatched on one of the nfo files? I'm just a bit lost as to what I need to do to get it to show properly...

Ideally you add the persion to where they need to be (series, season, episode, or movie) as there role, then upload there image as needed.

Like me adding my self to this movie

But if I got to my details page and edit the name in any way I will be removed as there is now a mismatch between movie and person. Make since?

So cast is not relational, as in no cascading update?

I cheated and moved myself to be first in nfo after adding myself.

So but adding in someone for a single episode should be fine right? I haven't added that person in before or any other variation. Also on that same note, is it not possible to have 2 different people with similar names in your database?

Similar yes, Same no.  That is the issue right now as same name actors you have to choose which one you want.

Adding actor to episode is fine, but if actor already exists in database you need to ensure exact spelling.

So then in the case of Mr. Vince Rodriguez, it's possible there may be one in one of my nfo files with slightly different spelling that I'm missing? Or is the issue actually with TMDB and not with my existing files?

So just an update, I went through every single nfo file and deleted every variation of Vince, and then tried adding him to one episode but no dice... It still immediately removed him, it still shows in the individual nfo file for the episode but nowhere else. So is the issue because of the conflict on TMDB? Wouldn't adding him in as separate Actor on the site fix that though? Or is there some other issue that would be causing this?

I don't have any other Person in my system with the Name Vince so I can't see it being an issue with mismatching names in my system...

What do you get when you search Vince in Emby?

Posted

Ok so doing a search in Emby does come up with a bunch, but I don't see a way of getting rid of them. I've already deleted the person.xml file on the computer so the file location doesn't actually exist. And I'm not seeing a way to delete them from the web interface...

Posted

You don't delete people, you simply remove them from the titles they appear in.

But removing them from the nfo file of the episode isn't working, now I just have a bunch of duplicates who aren't in any shows... And I imagine trying to add them in again will Garner the same result of it getting removed because there's a bunch of duplicate people with slight variations on their names...

But removing them from the nfo file of the episode isn't working

Why do you think this? Are you saying you remove it but it still displays on the movie screen?

Posted (edited)

Removing it still displays all the duplicate names in a search on Emby. And adding it again ads it to the nfo file but it immediately removes it from the web interface. From what Happy2Play was mentioning is that the reason it's getting immediately removed is because it's conflicting, so I'm assuming that I need to somehow remove the duplicates before I can add him in and have it not disappear

Ok yea that can be tricky to climb out of. The next release of the server has made a change to ensure it doesn't happen again. Thanks.

Ok so for now short of starting completely from scratch there's not a lot I can do. But if I wait until the next update I should be able to fix it?

No, it won't making fixing this example any easier, it will just help ensure it doesn't happen again to the next actor you try to customize manually.

Ah got it, so the only way to fix it is to start from scratch then? Good to know the next update should stop it from happening again though

Also on another note I figured out how to quote on mobile, yay!

Is there any way to clean this up at the moment?  The actors still show up in a search.  However, when you view them, they are not associated with anything.  It seems like there should be an option to delete it in this case.  By not associated with anything, I mean no title or season is listed underneath their info.

Yea it's something we can improve in a future update. Thanks.

I'm not going to beat a dead horse, so this will be my last comment on it.

At a minimum, there should be a report for all actors, especially orphaned actors (no movies or TV related items).  Those orphaned actors should have a way to delete them so the name can be re-used.

This bug or behavior impacts those of us with custom cast where we manually enter data from online sources whether it's from custom sporting events, home movies, or an aggregation of data from various porn databases.  It can't, won't, or should not be populated through Emby due to the lack of appropriate API.  Given that, it's currently a completely manual task.  This is why creating a new library to fix it is not a solution IMO.

This is different from actual video content in that video content has corresponding NFO files to load most of the data.  If I were to create a new library, the import process should pick up everything.

This isn't the case for custom casts.  We need to enter everything via the GUI except the actor's name and the role (which would be 'actor', 'composer', 'director', etc... and not the 'starred as' name).  If there was a method for importing cast data such as an NFO file or a REST API for this, it would make everything much easier.  This could also help negate having a method for Emby to support bulk editing.  Create a bunch of NFO files or run a custom script to populate or update a bunch of actors and it's all good.
