Emby Service is gone

The regular emby server log might have something.

Have you messed UAC settings in your windows installation?

UAC here is turned off. It has also been set up through the local group policy, but that has never bothered anything else.

That probably explains it, because when we launch the process to install the service, we're using "runas" to request elevation. And I'm guessing that's probably causing the process launch to fail. We are not attempting any workarounds to account for UAC being turned off so you need to just put it back on.

Can I send them somewhere? I don't want to post them here.

Not needed anymore. i think the above is your solution.

Unfortunately not. I changed all UAC group policy settings to their defaults, moved to slider to default, uninstalled Emby, rebooted, installed Emby, made sure the checkbox is cleared and still no service. And yes, now the installer is asking for the elevation.

Now we will need an actual log file. I would guess that you must have some oddball setup that we are simply not accounting for.

Having said that, we won't be doing any new development related to this, so you may just want to use the tray icon for now until the .NET Core server is fully released.

1) Can I send it somewhere? I'd like to get to the bottom of it, if possible

2) I guessed as much. If it's too much trouble, I might as well wait.

Yes you can PM it to me. Thanks.

There is a new development.

As previously said, the aforementioned procedure didn't bring any thing, however, removing the checkbox for startup, then quitting Emby, and starting it up again, windows asked for elevation and installed the service.

However, it will not automatically change from Manual to Automatic -> not a problem per se, just describing the behavior.

That has always been a manual change to the service.

FWIW, I disable UAC on all of my PCs and have never had an issue installing/updating Emby or anything else.

I had UAC disabled since Win7 came out, and throughout Win10 too. Emby and everything else always installed correctly.

Unless it is a regional thing in the OS it self, both machines is test on add service with installation and remove service with unistallation.

So I too had my Insider build update (16275) and restart, and no longer have the ability to register the Emby service.  I have attempted to do a runas with Administrator, and even went so far as to elevate it using "NT Authority\System" to no avail.  I've attached the last two logs, should that help.

I would instead just use the same method mentioned here at the bottom of the first post:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/50012-emby-server-for-net-core/

Starting with the next stable server release, that will be the recommended approach for all installations. Users who have been using the pre-installed service from Emby can stay on that if they want, but since you don't have it available, you might as well just switch to the new way.

Unless I'm missing something, I couldn't find a way to import user profiles, libraries, play state, etc into the .NET Core build.  Or are you suggesting that I use NSSM to register the existing .EXE as a service?

That what this topic is about.  Only way to restore other stuff is with the Server Configuration Baskup Plugin.  Or importing from old database to new database.

Correct, I'm not saying you need to switch to the .NET Core installation, although you can if you like. All I'm saying use the same process to setup a Windows Service.

Once the current beta goes stable i'll have a wiki article up about how to setup a windows service.

Which version of NSSM are you using? Stable (quite old, from 2014), featured pre-release or latest beta?

I tested on prerelease because it specifically mentioned fixes for recent windows 10 changes.

I've been using 103 for several months with no issues.  The featured pre-release v101 would sometimes freeze on me with other apps.
