Some questions from a plex user

Hey guys

 

I've used plex for a few years now but of late their support has really dropped away, especially for the xbox one which is my app of choice.

 

So I was wondering if Emby may be more suitable for me and hoping a few of you fine folk might be able to give me your opinions, especially if you have experience with the xbox one app on both.

 

Is Emby generally up to the same standards as plex? Anything it is behind in? Anything it has that plex doesn't have on the xbox one (did I see the ability to watch m3u streams?)?

 

My server is a nas so I need to avoid transcoding if at all possible. With that in mind, does this app have support for soft subtitles such as .srt without a transcode? This is something I have been hoping for from plex for a long time

 

Generally what type of support does this app receive? updated regularly?

 

Also I am not home right now to check but am I right in thinking I would either need to purchase the app or a subscription to use it on the xbox one?

 

Any other info or opinions appreciated

My advice would be to just grab a monthly subscription and try it out for a full month, if you're not happy, just cancel. I love Emby, but you're probably going to get bias opinions on it from everyone here. I've used it on the Xbox One without any troubles (last time I checked there was an official app and a 3rd party one, both are great). I don't use the Xbox much anymore since I have a dedicated HTPC.

 

Regarding support, the apps are updated regularly, and the people on the forums here are amazing.

The support and transparency for all apps is much better than Plex IMO.

Is anyone able to comment on what features this does and doesn't have when compared to the plex xbox one app?

For look and feel i much prefer the Emby app (i have both installed)

 

However, if you want to avoid transcoding i would probably give it a try for a month and see how it works with your content

 

For me the Plex Xbox app plays everything i throw at it, Emby app will transcode it

This is my only negative of the Emby Xbox app, it transcodes more than it should
