Rasmon 0 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Hi Everyone, I just setup Media Browser 3 Server on my system and setup some profiles. I logged into the Windows 7 PC as a user that does not have access to the network shares. This is intentional, as I want to use Media Browser Profiles to access different shares based on what that individual’s view ratings (i.e. G, PG, PG 13, R, etc). I was expecting to find a way to put in share passwords when setting up the profiles, but I don't see a way to do that. So, when I have Media Browser Server scan, it cannot find the files. I don't want to login to the Windows 7 PC as a user that has access to all the shares, as the person controlling the PC could simply close out of Media Browser and start opening files and playing movies, regardless of what their Media Browser profile says they should/shouldn't be able to view. Note: I am using Server Version 3.0.5135.31685 I have shares like the following: \\ServerName\Media\PG \\ServerName\Media\PG13 \\ServerName\Media\R I want to setup Profiles like: Kim = PG Carol = PG and PG13 Ras and Peggie = PG, PG13, and R I would prefer not to have to setup different Windows logins with passwords, as that would simply slow down the boot of the Media Center. I would prefer to have it login as someone who doesn’t have access to any shares, and then have Media Browser use specific users/passwords for each share based on the individuals profile. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks!
Logos302 86 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) What you could do is run MB3 as a service and setting the services logon account with a user that has rights to everything. That way when you logon as your regular user the service will still have rights to everything while leave your other user with out. This will also mean that if they don't have direct access to the shares at that user but do based on your mb server setup that you will not be able to direct play that file. Warning running as a service does have limitations (Auto-Updating being one of them). Edited February 24, 2014 by Logos302
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 You can control access by rating within Media Browser instead of the Windows level. Go into the dashboard and select Users. Select the User you want to edit by clicking on their name and click on "Library Access" (was called Parental Ratings) on older versions. Select what ratings the user should have access to. You can also remove access to entire folders on this page in the newest version of the server. However both the server and any direct access Windows clients would need read access to all content.
Logos302 86 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) The reason that this will not work for him or at least from what I can gather is that he has both the server and the client on the same machine. Which would mean that if the server has access as the logon user (which it would need) then so does the user and could just exit mb and open explorer and play the file. But maybe I'm reading it wrong . Edited February 24, 2014 by Logos302
Rasmon 0 Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 Thanks Logos, you read it correctly. The service idea sounds reasonable. Sad to hear it has limitations though. I'll give it a shot. Does this project allow for enhancement requests? If so, I think a good one would be putting usernames and passwords directly into the profile so the Windows user does not need access to everything. And then we can still get the other updates. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

ebr 16169 Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 What client app are you using? MBC will require direct access to the media content. The others won't.
