I can see a lot of lost of people forgetting their passwords because of a feature like this. The only way I see it being useful is if u can assign a temporary 1 time use password to say a guest account. Then I can for example tell someone to check out a movie give them the info n temporary password and let them watch whatever it is and the password automatically resets itself once they are finished watching so they can't log back in to the server and watch more movies

Password forgetting is a fact of life these days.  I would think that this would be good for a guest account but I'm no talking about guest accounts.  I setup user B and set a temp password which is sent via email or in person and then they change it on first logon.  Then they have access with this user/password forever.

This seems like way overkill for a media application but I guess if there were a lot of support.

 

If we're going to mess with passwords, I think it might be beneficial to have multiple passwords for user accounts.  One for use from HTPC or local clients and one for use from remote clients.  This would enable people to have simple PIN type passwords for MBT/MBC and more complex ones for the web and other remote clients.

Interesting. What is the use case?

 

This really should be consistent so that means all of our apps would have to do it. That means I have to get a dozen developers together and see that they all make the change. So just need to make sure there's a good reason.

Yes, please. Or a per user option so that passwords aren't even required on the same subnet regardless of client.

I would see the use case in a small business or enterprise like a school. You set up a bulk of users and just assign a generic password. On login, they are prompted to change it.

I also would use it for family members where I set no password and allow them to choose there password.  It's the Network administrator in me not wanting to know peoples passwords

Yea and actually i take back what i said. we wouldn't have to force all clients to implement it. the server could just reject any login attempts until they go to the web interface and reset it.

  Depends on the password.  Number passwords work just fine.
