atropa 10 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Hello is it normal that when you forward or rewind the film is transcoded complete again ? My experience with plex was that when the film was transcoded completely you could go forward or back without new transcode. regards
ebr 16185 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Hi. Can you provide more information about what you are actually doing and in which app? Why do you think it is "transcoding again"?
atropa 10 Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 Hey. Ok. I have a i3 7100 Kaby Lake. Quick sync activated. It transcodes from hevc to h264. I start a movie which is transcoded after 10 minutes. Cpu is at 80 percent and gpu at 50 to 60 percent during the process. After transcoding cpu and gpu go idle and i can watch the movie to the end without transcoding. But if i fast forward or rewind the movie, the transcoding starts again from that point. Tested on Android app Galaxy S6 , Galaxy Tab and Firefox browser web app.
Luke 42080 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 @@atropa, if the transcode has completed for the entire video, then seeking will not start a new transcode session. If it has not completed, then it will start a new transcode session. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
atropa 10 Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 Hey Luke, yes this helped me a lot thx..But then something is definitly going wrong cause seeking causes a new transcode session. The transcode has completed the entire video and every time i go back or forward a new transcode starts.
Luke 42080 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Can you please discuss a specific example? Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !
Guest asrequested Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 That's an odd one. If I remember, tonight I'll try this, and see what happens. I'm assuming you're on the stable release of the server?
Guest asrequested Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) So I was playing around with this. Using chrome to watch an HEVC video, so it would transcode it. The dashboard doesn't seem to show that it's transcoding again, but multiple ffmpeg logs are made. Is that supposed to happen? And sometimes playback freezes for bit. Though, that may be unrelated. I made a big GIF of this happening, 28MB. If you want to see it? And I tried it with and without QuickSync enabled. Same result. Edited August 11, 2017 by Doofus
Guest asrequested Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Please see post #6, thanks ! Right! Here is the GIF and the logs generated during the test. As mentioned, played an HEVC encoded show in the chrome. As you will see, the red line is complete, indicating fully transcoded. I then skipped around, backward and forward over 6 minutes. The GIF is approximately the last minute and a half (I know it's a bit long). The red line remains full, but you will see that I had a window open with the logs in it. I would refresh that window and new transcode logs of the show I was watching would be generated. The question is, is that expected behavior? If not, why is this happening? The server log is big, the time frame, as you can see in the GIF, is around 8:06pm.
Luke 42080 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Looking at the server log it doesn't appear like you waited for the transcoding to finish.
Guest asrequested Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Looking at the server log it doesn't appear like you waited for the transcoding to finish. Now that is interesting. The only way to tell if it has completed the transcode, is to look at the dashboard. As you can see, the red line is complete. Is this misrepresenting what is actually happening? How else are we to know if it is complete?
Luke 42080 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Sometimes we don't have the progress. I'll have to see if it might be showing as complete in that situation.
Guest asrequested Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Sometimes we don't have the progress. I'll have to see if it might be showing as complete in that situation. Is there a way to accurately represent how much has been transcoded, in the app that is being used? I guess that would be a feature request.
atropa 10 Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) Hey. Yes i am on the stable release. 1.Transcoding starts 2. Transcoding ended and cpu gpu go idle 3. On the tab it is 100 percent transcoded 4. Seeking starts a new transcoding session Doesnt matter which file format it is. Hevc or x264. If it has to be transcoded, it happens. Guest asrequested Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Yup! Watching the stats while seeking, you can see transcoding change from 100% to a lower percentage.
Luke 42080 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Tested with Chrome, no problem found. One ffmpeg session the entire time.
Guest asrequested Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 So why do you think that we are seeing this?
Luke 42080 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 There might be a situation in which the red progress bar is incorrectly showing completed. That would be my guess.
atropa 10 Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 But it is not only the red progress bar. The transcode has completely ended. It doesnt matter how long i wait. Even if i wait almost until the end of the movie ,if i seek the transcode starts. Android app shows 100 percent and after seeking it goes to 40 or 60 or wherever i seek to. Strange.....
