Feature Request: Copy Download Link

Using the web app file download function through any iOS browser does not provide a good experience. For some reason, downloads on iOS many times are not handled very well with no download progress report given anywhere. For long and big downloads this is a problem. This does not happen on all web apps and all iOS browsers, for example, downloading from the kodi web interface through chrome is handled well giving a progress report of the download, but this does not happen in safari. So all in all, the way downloads are handled from iOS browsers does not provide a great user experience.

 

I think it would be really useful if we could also use a download link that we could copy and use in any other app that has an specific download function, like VLC.As far as I know, there is no easy way to scrape the download link from iOS browser or either to come up with one easily.

It may well be the download function is not working on iOS, lsof on emby server system does not show the file open, whereas when downloading from desktop it show it.

In the browser we are simply deferring to the device's native download function. We have no control over how it will display it.

 

We are working on downloading within the iOS app and that will offer a better experience.

It does not seem to be working on iOS for me really, displayed or not. Could anybody confirm or deny?

 

Cant test the iOS app as it requires unlock purchase but I can see it also offers the download option right now, it wouldnt work?

No, there's currently no download option in the iOS app, but it's on our short term radar.

Oh I see, it says 'download to other device'.

 

Is the emby-web-defaultskin repo a skin for the web app? In such a case, should I be able to fork the skin to add a 'copy download link to clipboard' button somewhere? If so, is it relevant what skin version I am using vs the web app version? how should I keep them in sync?

After poking around a bit, I guess that is not the case. I will try to see if I can propose a patch to fix the download issue on iOS.
